Descendants of Thomas Riley

This is the family tree of the Rileys, owners of Trinity Manor for most of the 20th century. It traces this initially non-conformist Baptist family from its early days in Yorkshire to its Anglo-Catholic days as Jersey landowners, having married into the peerage not long beforehand. It was added to the site in 2013 and reviewed in 2020 and 2023

Riley family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Weaver (1781)
  2. Of Sowerby, in the parish of St John the Baptist, Halifax, Weaver (1809). He was described on marriage in 1801 as being of Wadsworth, and a Cotton Manufacturer indicating, no doubt, that he was so employed. He went alone in 1834 to New South Wales, where he died
  3. Of Midgley, West Yorkshire, Weaver
  4. Stuff Weaver in 1861, at Mill Hill, Sowerby: UK Census, Halifax, West Yorkshire. He was, as a widower for the second time in 1881, a Tapestry Carpet Weaver, living with his unmarried daughters, Jane and Sarah, aged respectively 36 and 32, the former being a Cotton Winder and the latter a Weaver
  5. There was, of this marriage, a numerous issue
  6. Farmer
  7. Weaver, living in Sowerby
  8. Grace should not be confused with another Grace Riley, who was born 27th March 1818, daughter of a different Henry Riley and of his wife Grace. William Stansfield`s wife, Grace, was described, on her marriage, as being a minor
  9. Of Sowerby, Weaver, which was also the description of Grace`s father
  10. John Riley was described on marriage in 1805, aged nineteen, as being, as was his brother Henry, a Cotton Manufacturer, of Wadsworth, in Heptonstall, West Riding of Yorkshire. It is unlikely that either brother had, at that age, their own business; the description probably referred to their employment. In 1851, he was a Merchant and Manufacturer of [Worsted] Stuffs, living at Brearley House, Midgley: 1851 UK Census, Midgley, Yorkshire
  11. The Gentleman`s Magazine (1860), Volume 200, 105, has: "At Brearley House, near Halifax, aged 75, Mrs Riley, relict of John Riley Esq., J.P."
  12. Of Heptonstall, Yeoman
  13. Merchant and Manufacturer, as was his father and father-in-law: Marriage Register, Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire. 14. Merchant and Manufacturer, of Hebden Bridge, West Riding
  15. Landowner and Farmer of 300 acres at Putley Court, Herefordshire. Jean Ila Currie, Three Centuries of a Herefordshire Village; Putley, 1685 until now, (Cambridge: Owlstone Press, 2009), 116-134, much of which is available online, provides much detail regarding this branch of the family. Of interest is that whilst John Riley was a Herefordshire squire, his business interests remained in the Halifax area
  16. Jeweller, of 21, Bloomfield Terrace, Belgravia: UK Census, St George, Hanover Square
  17. Living on his own means; Independent

Mr Hanbury was the grandson of Robert Hanbury, J.P., Brewer, of London and Thundridge, Hertfordshire, of whom it was written that "he may fairly be regarded as not merely the head of the great Spitalfields house [Truman`s Brewery] but as the father of London brewing". With "his beautiful estate of Poles, near Ware, Hertfordshire" he was "a grand specimen of the English merchant and, at the same time, a thorough country gentleman": The Journal, (2017), The Brewery History Society.
