Descendants of William Lillicrap

This tree, submitted by a user, caused us considerable concern. John Lillicrap was shown as born in 1814, married to Amelia Couch and father of 13 children born between 1847 and 1884. Amelia was shown as born in 1837. She would have been only ten when John's first daughter was born and Thomas would have been 70 when his last child was born. Those two ages were impossible and unlikely.

Jersey church records show John and Amelia Couch as parents of the children born between 1861 and 1884. Jersey census returns show the family from 1861 onwards. John and Amelia are shown as husband and wife. John's birth year is shown as 1826 in 1861, 1816 in 1871 and 1814 in 1881. By 1891 he has clearly died, because Amelia, who is shown throughout as born in 1837, is head of the household.

We now know that John was born in 1825 rather than 1814, making him a more believable 59 when his last child was born, and that he was married and had six children before coming to Jersey. The 1861 Jersey census return for John's household shows four of his first six children (perhaps two died in infancy) and the youngest, Matilda, is shown as being born in Alderney. The others are shown as born in Jersey, but there is no parish record of their births in the island.

There are a number of online trees showing the family, and one links to an English census record for 1841, which shows John as a farmer's son, born in 1816, with six younger siblings. However, this cannot be his family. The tree as submitted, and others, show John's father as Thomas, but we now know from his marriage certificates that his father was William, a journeyman.

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
