Edward Henry Wehnert 1813-1868

While most of Jersey's visiting artists were drawn to Mont Orgueil and Elizabeth Castles and other coastal scenes, German landscape painter Edward Wehnert chose the quarry at Mont Mado as one of his subjects.

He is also remembered for having taught the young John Everett Millais shortly before the latter left to pursue his art education in London. Wehnert returned to London in 1837 having joined the New Watercolour Society the previous year. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institution, Royal Society of British Artists and the New Watercolour Society. A collection of his work is held by the Victoria and Albert Museum.
