New records
From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origins of surname
Langlois is the surname found in Jersey to indicate an early immigrant from England, so what about England? It is not so obvious a name as may first appear. It is found throughout the British Isles, but its origins are Germanic, deriving from the tribes of North Germany known as the Angles. These were the people who invaded the eastern and northern counties of Britain in the 5th and 6th Centuries, and thereby gave their name to East Anglia and subsequently England.
The word Englise was originally used by the British to distinguish Angles from Saxons, but by the time surnames were being created it may well have distinguished an Englishman from the native Celts in the border counties of Wales and Scotland. After 1066 the description may also have served to mark the difference between the Anglo-Saxon and the all-conquering Norman-French invaders of King William 1.
Early records
The name first appears in the St Helier baptism records in 1837-1841 with the baptism of three children of John Thomas England and Sarah Harris. They were followed in 1842 and 1853 by Thomas Francis and Elvina Elizabeth, children of Thomas England and Elizabeth Cullis, who had married in the parish in 1841. John and Sarah had another daughter Mary Ann baptised in 1843.

These lists replace earlier Family page baptism lists, which were not regularly updated. They have the added advantage that they produce a chronological listing for the family name in all parishes, so you do not have to search through A-Z indexes, parish by parish.

Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De.
