Private Virgile Gustave Fosse


Virgile Gustave Fosse (1881-1918) with his wife Annie and seven children. A private in the Hampshire Regiment, he died on 17 May 1918 of battle wounds at the 1st Canadian Casualty Clearing Station and was buried at the nearby British cemetery at Pernes-en-Artois.
Born in St Saviour, the son of French parents Felix and Adele Fosse, of Leonard House, Albert Street, he was one of four children, his siblings being Felix, Emma and Celina. A carter for G J Laurens he married Angeline, born in France in 1880, in 1905. They had sons Peter and John in 1908 and 1910. Annie had been married before and her daughter Elise and sons Francis and Emile were living with the family at Tilgate Cottage, Payn Street, in 1911. When Virgile died his wife and children were living at 13 La Motte Street
