The brother of illustrious naval officer Vice-Admiral Philip Durell, George Durell was the son of Jersey's Solicitor-General Jean Durell and Elizabeth Corbet.
Born on 20 August 1713, he married his cousin, Elizabeth Sausmarez, fifth daughter of Mathieu Sausmarez of Guernsey.
Along with his brother he is believed to have taken part in Admiral Lord Hawke's battle against the French fleet off Finisterre, although there are conflicting reports about which of the two brothers was in command of HMS Gloucester during the engagement.
