Gilbert

Amelia Gilbert (1840-1918), daughter of James, of Devon,
and Mary Treadway
Direct links to lists of baptisms, marriages and burials for the Gilbert family can be found under Family Records opposite. If you want to search for records for a spelling variant of Gilbert, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the
family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter,
for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want
and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the yellow Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.
New records
From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origins of surname
Not surprisingly, this surname came from the personal name with the same spelling, and although it is established throughout the British Isles, it is of Norman French origin - Guilbert - going back even further to the Germanic Gislebert.
Early records
Guilbert is found in Jersey church records as early as 1579, but other records in various spellings go back to the 13th century. Gilbert is not a name which has ever truly become established and it is likely that several lines have died out, to be replaced by new immigrant families. The list of marriages below shows that several of the men arrived in Jersey from Guernsey
- Jean Gilbert married Susanne Maugier in St Brelade in 1637
- Jacques, from France, married Elizabeth Chevalier of St Helier in St Mary in 1750
- James, from Guernsey, married Elizabeth Guilliard, also of Guernsey, in St Saviour in 1783
- Henry, from Guernsey, married Anne Huart of St Brelade in that parish in 1786
- Nicolas, from Guernsey, married Marguerite Le Cras, of St Saviour, in 1822
- Jean Marie, from St Malo, married Josephine Aglae Payn in St Helier in 1826
- James, from Ireland, married Mary Bolt, of Weymouth in St Helier in 1832
- William, from Cornwall, married Elizabeth Radford, of Devon, in St Helier in 1832
- Augustine Hearn, RN, married Olivia Ellen Daly, of Dublin, in St Helier in 1833

Gilbert greengrocers

Albert Gilbert, known to everyone as 'Pop' moved to Jersey from Sheffield in 1923 and set up a fruit and vegetable stall in the Beresford Street market.
He was an innovative businessman and brought down the price of fruit and vegetables in the island through direct importation.
He moved out of the market to set up shop at 16 Halkett Place, just before the Second World War and continued there until his retirement, interrupted by the Occupation. As an evacuee he ran a second greengrocery business in Bournemouth, sold it to move to the Midlands, and then returned to Jersey after the war.
Hesent his son John to charter an aircraft to fly to Africa so that the people of Jersey could enjoy the taste of banana for the first time in years.
On his retirement he and his wife May, and some of their eight children, moved to Canada for a a few years. He bought a large estate on the Frazer River, which he eventually sold so that it could be used to build homes for ex-servicemen.
He returned to Jersey with his wife and set up home at Lavender Cottage, Havre des Pas. His son Tom followed him in the greengrocery trade, at 24 Halkett Street and St Clement's Road. Daughter Jean was a champion diver.

Emma Gilbert, the 51-year-old widow of Philip William Lempriere, was convicted by the January Assizes in 1917 of carrying out an abortion and sentenced to 15 years penal servitude by the Royal Court. She was the eighth of nine children of seaman Isaac Gilbert and Mary Gale, of St Brelade, and married Philip in 1886 when she was 20 and he was 37. Although her sentence may seem very harsh, 100 years ago abortion was considered to be the equivalent of murder and carried a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

Tips
The church record links above will open in a new tab in your browser and generate the most up-to-date list of each set of records from our database. These lists replace earlier Family page baptism lists, which were not regularly updated. They have the added advantage that they produce a chronological listing for the family name in all parishes, so you do not have to search through A-Z indexes, parish by parish.
We have included some important spelling variants on some family pages, but it may be worth searching for records for a different spelling variant. Think of searching for variants with or without a prefix, such as Le or De. To search for further variants, or for any other family name, just click on the appropriate link below for the first letter of the family name, and a new tab will open, giving you the option to choose baptism, marriage or burial records. You will then see a list of available names for that type of record and you can select any name from that list. That will display all records of the chosen type for that family name, and you can narrow the search by adding a given name, selecting a parish or setting start and end dates in the form you will see above. You can also change the family name, or search for a partial name if you are not certain of the spelling
New records
Since August 2020 we have added several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
