John Winter Labey was one of the stalwarts of the Jersey Swimming Club. He joined in 1885 and was elected to the council in 1893. From being captain of the club in 1901 to junior vice-president in 1915 and senion vice-president in 1921, he we elected president in 1927.

He celebrated over the next two years by assembling an album of photographs of activities at the Havre des Pas Pool which, following his proposal, was opened by the club in 1985 to provide a safe venue for swimmers and divers.

The album contains hundreds of photographs, not only of aquatic sports, but of life at the pool which became the centre of the island's social scene by the 1920s
