Jersey cabbages

The Jersey cabbage or kale is a giant variety, once grown all over the island, but now rarely seen. The stem grows tall and straight and if cut, dried and varnished it makes an excellent walking stick. These sticks were popular souvenirs for holidaymakers, with an enamelled Jersey penny set into the head, and some are still made to this day.
