Origins of surname

The name is derived from the personal name Jouanny, which is a diminuitive of Jouan or Jean. It is particularly common in Brittany. There is a separate Jouanne family in Jersey which came from Normandy.

Early records

The family first arrived in Jersey in the 1870s. The family which became established then can traces its origins to Plaintel, a small town in the Cotes d'Armor department of north Brittany.
