L'Etacq Tower

This tower at the northern end of St Ouen's Bay, also known as L'Etacquerel, was built between 1832 and 1834, and is of similar style to Martello towers. It was destroyed by the Germans in World War Two

The Martello Tower was situated at the northern end of St Ouen's Bay about 1.5km from Lewis Tower. It was built in 1833 by contactor John Benest at a cost of £840. Armed with a 32pdr on the roof originally, a report of 1840 states there was a 24pdr on a traversing platform. It had accommodation for one sergeant and twelve men and a magazine holding 70 barrels of gunpowder.

It was demolished in 1944 during the Occupation to be replaced with Strongpoint L’Etaquerel – a large bunker to house a 10.5cm coastal gun
