Lake

Nellie Lake (1894-1991)
Nellie was born in St Aubin in 1894, the daughter of John William Lake (1868-1940), born in Guernsey, and Hannah Celeste Taylor (1873-1917, of Northern Ireland, who married in St Brelade in 1891.
Although there are records for her elder sister Elsie Mai, who died ten weeks after she was born in 1892, and Gladys May, born in St Lawrence in 1894 and died the following year, there is no birth record for Nellie, who would presumably have been her twin, and is shown in 1901, 1911 and 1921 census returns as born in Jersey.
In 1901 she was in Wales with her parents, who separated two years later. She then went to Guernsey to live with an uncle and aunt. Her father had another 11 children from a second relationship.
Nellie was a Red Cross Nurse in 1917 and 1918. In 1920 she married Willis Douglas Harold Shipway in London. He served in the Royal Navy and Nellie was back in Guernsey staying with friends at the time of the 1921 census. In 1923 she and her husband emigrated to the USA, settling in California

Origins of surname
Although it might be thought that this was a name given to someone living near a lake, that is unlikely. The old English words lacu meant a watercourse, and laecc, a bog. Lake, in the sense we know it, did not appear in English until the 13th century, and is not thought to be the derivation of this surname
Early records
The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the baptism of Courntney Jackson, illegitimate son of Mary Lake in St Saviour in 1812. It was not until 1835 that a family was established by George Lake and his wife Nancy Syvret
