Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

The house is illustrative of a higher status residence aspired to by prosperous mid-Victorian professionals.

The visual character of the well-proportioned house and the quality of its architectural style are of significance, with the full-height canted bay windows, unusually at the front and back, and the intricately worked cast-iron porch, of which few examples of this type are known elsewhere.

Built circa 1860s/1870 as a detached Victorian 'villa'. The pitched slate roof and rendered chimneys were replaced in the mid-20th century.

The property was owned by members of the press, teachers and shipmasters with links to local schools as well as teacher training institutions as far afield as Jamaica.
