Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

An unusual pair of rural semi-detached cottages, dating to the 17th century, with a good survival of original features and character; also contributing to rural streetscape character. Shown on the Richmond Map of 1795.

Window openings with six piece surrounds appear to be original, though the sash windows are probably later. The 4/2 sashes are probably 18th century. Two shallow recesses may be blocked windows. Additions to north are more recent. Slate roof laid in diamond pattern. Rendered stone chimneys with thatch dripstones. Random rubble construction with irregular stone quoins. Small window openings with uprights, raised by two quoins. First floor windows are 12 pane (6/6) sashes. Ground floor window is wider with 16 pane (8/8) sash. Shallow recess (possible blank window) with uprights under eaves on west side. Irregularly shaped stone lintel over door, uprights on the sides.

Old Jersey Houses

The author suggests that the smaller of the two cottages may have been built before the other. Although official documents show the owner in 1670 as J Le Petevin dit Le Roux, the author fails to find any architectural proof that either cottage is that old, but does note some alterations probably made in the 18th century.
