Looking down on smoke from a fire at the Norman's Limited store, 24 Commercial Buildings, in September 1949 The fire was first noticed by Police Constables Walter Renouf and Ted Cockerham. The Fire Brigade arrived within minutes. Mrs de Gruchy, wife of caretaker Adolphus de Gruchy, and other residents of 23 Commercial Buildings swiftly left the premises. The fire gutted the store, which was used for tomato packing and to house box wood and agricultural sundries. Picture Evening Post
