Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

Mid-late 19th century farmstead [3] retaining original historic features and character. Two-storey, five-bay farmhouse and barn with outbuildings to rear.

Detached barn at right angles to west, now residential. Vehicle arch at south end, datestone 1857 above keystone.

Notes and references

  1. This is unlikely to have been a market value transaction for the whole property, and may have been an outbuilding before conversion to residential use
  2. Joseph Barette's name is found spelt in a number of ways. John Jean's Jersey Sailing Ships lists Joseph Hedley Barrett as a sea captain, but his baptism and marriage records show him as Joseph Barette. There is no official record to indicate that he had Hedley as a second forename, as did his great-grandson Joseph Hedley (1903- ) who eventually inherited the house
  3. Although eventually used as a farmhouse, Malta House was not built as such, but as a family home for a sea captain
