Listed building

  • No 53: Substantial mid-19th century house. Streetscape value by virtue of its prominent corner location and portico. In 1881 census the property was listed at the Saint Andrew's Institute and housed 22 religious nuns. Many of the nuns came from Belgium and had links to the the FCJ Convent. End terrace corner building, set back. three-storey with basement and rounded corner. Front elevation: two bays to David Place. Slate hipped roof with small dormer on side. Render with Egyptian style eaves. One bay with blind windows. Steps with iron railings lead up to door and porch with Ionic corner style columns and triglyph cornice. Two-panel door, top one glazed original overlight and side lights set behind timber frame. Side elevation: Two bays to St Mark's Road. Stone boundary wall with iron railings and gates.
  • No 53a: Part of a row of substantial mid-19th century houses, of streetscape value. Mid-terrace, set back. Three-bay, three-storey with basement. Front elevation: Slate roof. Stucco with Egyptian style eaves. Doorway with overlight. Steps up to door and down to basement with iron railings. Stone boundary wall with iron railings.
