This is a name which became synonymous with cattle breeding in Jersey in the 20th century, although there was no history of farming in the family which emigrated from France to the island

Origins of surname

Although this name is undoubtedly of French origin, we have failed to find any references which could establish its meaning

Early records

The first appearance of this surname in Jersey records was the arrival of Eugene Perredes, a professor of French from the south of the country in the 1850s. The family's early church records were probably connected with Roman Catholic churches, which have yet to be made available online

A postcard sent to Mr Perredes at Croix Catelain, Grouville in 1905
Another card, sent from France without a stamp, in 1907. The recipient was grower Gedeon Paul Perredes who was living with two servants at Croix Catelain at the time of the 1891 census, described as 'Master' rather than usual 'Head' of household. He married Jane Esther Mourant later that year and they had six children. Although all census entries show him as Gedeon P Perredes, he appears to have been known as Paul to family and friends
