Origin of surname

Perrée is a variation of Pierre and would have been a given name before its use as a family name. Pierre is French for 'stone', so it is possible that the original Pierres worked with stone in one way or another.

It is a name which has been in use in various forms in England since the Middle Ages and is said there to derive from the old English word pirige meaning pear tree.

The first English record of the name is that of Henry de Peri in 1176 in the Staffordshire Pipe Rolls, during the reign of Henry II.

The name is common in Normandy, from where it almost certainly came to Jersey.

Early records

It is not found in very early records, the earliest being from early 16th century. The similar names Perret, Perrier, Perier, Perrin, Perron and Perrot are all listed as distinct Normandy families, despite having a similar derivation. A Perrot is recorded in the Jersey Assize Roll of 1309.

The name de st Pierre was common in Jersey in the 16th Century but was probably distinct from Perree.

New records

Since August 2020 we have added several thousand new records from the registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These will appear in date order within a general search of the records and are also individually searchable within the database search form
