Bailiff of Jersey 1663-1665
Sir Philippe de Carteret

The brother of Sir George Carteret who had been Bailiff until 1661, Philippe succeeded their cousin and his namesake Sir Philippe de Carteret and served for three years until his death in September 1665.

Philippe was the second son of Jurat Elias de Carteret, Lieut-Bailiff, and Elizabeth Dumaresq. On the death of his father in 1640 he was elected Jurat to succeed him and sworn in on 17 September 1640. In 1642 he was Colonel of Mont Orgueil Castle and on 19 October in that year he married Marie de la Place, daughter of Elie, in St George's Chapel. His father-in-law was appointed Rector of St Martin in 1645 in succession to Dean David Bandinel.

He was still Colonel of the Castle as well as of the Militia in St Helier, St Saviour, St Clement and Grouville when the island was invaded by Parliamentary troops in 1651, and although he at first refused to surrender the Castle, the garrison mutinied. A contemporary account recorded:"The English Major, who had been placed there by order of the King, caused all to mutiny. Thye Master Gunner refused to act, and all threatened to hand him over to the enemy, if he did not surrender".

After the Restoration he resumed his role as Jurat and became the last resident Jerseyman to hold the office of Bailiff for some 185 years, although the office was to remain in his family.
