Philips Street

Philips Street was a residential street developed in the late 18th century by Philip Ingouville, and named after his son

Although the spelling of this St Helier street became Phillips, at least as early as 1874, we believe that the original correct spelling was with a single 'l', as shown on the 1834 Le Gros map of St Helier. The street was named after the developer's son Philip; along with Charles Street, Peter Street, Ann Street, Hilary Street and Wesley Street, all in the same area.
Today Philips Street is home to the Arts Centre and many modern office blocks. Not a single original property remains and the only residential property is at the far eastern end, opposite the Arts Centre

The street is now known as Phillips Street, which cannot be correct because it was named after the 19th century developer's son Philip
