Edward (Eddie) Ross and his wife Annie (Nan), decided to raise the slave workers' spirits by passing on information about Russian progress on the Eastern front. They drew a crude map using information gleaned from outlawed BBC news broadcasts and attempted to pass the information to a group working on the sea walls. They were challenged by German guards and arrested after a chase. The couple were found guilty and sentenced to six months' imprisonment in Coutances, in Normandy. They were separated and re-imprisoned. Nan was sent to Romainville and Eddie to Compiegne prison. During this time Eddie managed to smuggle out a letter to the Red Cross, and as a result the two were reunited at Vittel Internment Camp. From there, they and their baby were liberated in September 1944. Eddie died in Jersey in December 1983.
