Salvation Army postcard

This is a postcard picture taken in 1899 of a Salvation Army gathering at the Weighbridge. It is one of the earliest to have been sent from the island, only a handful dating back to the first in 1895 still in existence. This is a typical postcard of the era, when the back of the card was reserved strictly for the recipient's name and address, and any greetings having to be written on or around the picture. Even though cards would soon be produced with pictures covering the whole of the front, postal restrictions would continue to require messages of greeting to be written across the sky, or in some other convenient place where the writing would stand out from the background
