Soaking up ths sun after war is declared

War was declared in September 1939, but islanders initially believed that this would be a repeat of the First World War, fought many hundred miles away from Jersey, albeit involving the loss of life of many brave islanders who fought in the Army.

So it was no surprise to find Jersey families on the beach the weekend following the declaration, enjoying the warm weather brought by an Indian Summer. This picture set appeared in The Islander the following week.
