Talk:Descendants of Mathieu Le Couteur (c.1685)
These comments elaborate on uncertainty over the name of the wife of Mathieu (1685- )
The maternal grandmother of Elizabeth Asplet was named Elizabeth Bechervaise, according to publicly archived records. The great grandson, Philip Le Couteur (1928- ), of Elizabeth Asplet recorded in his diary that the paternal grandfather of Thomas Le Couteur, husband of Elizabeth Asplet, was named Elizabeth Bechervaise.
However, unlike the pedigree of Elizabeth Aspley, no public records have been found to corroborate the Philip's notes. It also seems unlikely that he had two g-g-g-grandmothers of the same name.
His 'memorised' diary information, which records his (paternal) g-g-g-grandmother, has been repeated in subsequent genealogical summaries. However it seems very possible that the maternal grandmother of his paternal g-grandmother, Elizabeth Asplet, had been transposed in his mind to his direct paternal ancestry of the same generation. The wife of Mathieu (1685- ) is therefore questionable.
