Talk:Descendants of Nicolas Le Couteur (1464- )
This early branch of the Le Couteur family stems from Nicolas (c.1464- ). His family were from St Mary but he brought up his children in St Peter. Although details of successive generations in the early centuries are sparse, records from the archives of the Societe Jersiase provide a link for this branch into the period when baptisms, marriages and deaths (BMDs) were recorded in the Parish Registers. The surname was predominantly spelled as Le Cousteur in St Peter throughout the earlier centuries, but this is reproduced as Le Couteur as a uniform standard in all the family trees, as it represents a the continuous lineage that transcends the local, conflicting and variable spelling in various records. The format of family tree entries in Jerripedia discourages the use of circa for dates so, rather than leave out indicative birth dates for example, the year shown is occasionally approximate. BMDS prior to 1700 can consistently link most individuals, also using peripheral and circumstantial information such as the godparents in cases of uncertainty, to avoid ambiguity. Some of the detail can hopefully be improved, or added to, in future.
This St Peter branch appears to have provided a predominant number of migratory descendants. Many inhabitants of St Peter were seafarers, an occupation suitable within a Parish bounded by coastline to the South and West of Jersey. One family member, Francois (c.1530-1608), joined the Elizabethan re-settlement of Sark in 1563 with Helier de Carteret, and was appointed one of the Jurats. His family appears to have operated shipping around the Channel Islands for many years. Others travelled further afield, with at least two sub-branches establishing living descendants in North America and Australia. One branch settled on the adjacent island of Guernsey and has been there over 200 years. Another branch from St Peter in the 18th century moved to England. Family trees for these living branches are linked to the ancestral pedigree of Nicolas Le Couteur (c.1464- ). Information which augments the sub-branches is acknowledged from Milton Le Couteur - Descendants of Pierre Le Couteur (1741- ) , Amanda Bennett - Descendants of Amice Le Couteur (1756- ) and Lindsay Horner - Descendants of Mathieu (c.1685- ) extending to Descendants of George Le Couteur (1828-1913). Present residents of St Peter now include descendants from other branches of the Le Couteur family who have populated Jersey for over 700 years.
