Mahy family members who served in World War 1:

Charles Mahy (1899- ) RE, then Mercantile Marine. This was my great uncle. There is a Medal Index Card from the Army and Merchant Navy. The latter appears to indicate that the British Medal was issued by the Army. The Army card indicates a Victory Medal and a British Medal were issued. I haven't been able to find the military records to indicate when he joined and left the Army, although I suspect it was probably "for the duration of the war" from when he was 18 (1917) or perhaps earlier if he lied about his age. I've found ship's list from 1921, but not his enlistment information yet. He died while on board the SS Southern Empress, 13th October 1942. His name is on the Tower Hill, London, Commonwealth War Memorial.

William John Mahy (1901- ) Mercantile Marine. This was my grandfather, brother to Charles Francis. His Medal Index Card indicates that WW1 Mercantile Marine and British medal ribbons were issued 08/10/1919 and the medals were issued 13/04/1921. I believe he started quite young, probably when he was 15 0r 16 (I have information and picture of him as a Pantryman), but no date yet. I'm trying to track down Ship's Lists to find out dates when he started. He died 05/07/1945, from TB at home in Southampton.
