Talk:Who were Marguerite d'Aubigne's ancestors?
First, if Philippe d'Aubigne, the Warden of the Isles who died 1236, was indeed a son of Ralph d'Aubigne who died on crusade in 1190, it cannot have been by Sibyl de Valognes. It was only in 1182 that Ralph paid a sum of marks to marry Sibyl, who was a widow. Per the Complete Peerage, vol. 10, pp.440ff, Sibyl was the widow of Robert de Ros of Helmsley when she married (circa 1166, as his 2nd wife) William de Percy, who was still living in 1174 and died before Easter 1175. Philippe, born about 1171, would had to have been by an earlier (unidentified) wife of Ralph. The same would be true of his brothers. Second, The author of the articke re Marqueritenotes the the DNB states that Elias d"Aubigne was probably the father of Philippe and Oliver, and goes on to say that an Elias was enfeoffed by Ralph's brother William d'Aubigne (d. 1167/8) lord of Belvoir, and so may have been William's brother. However, K.S.B. Keats-Rohan, in her 2002 work titled Domesday Descendants, (published by Boydell Press), cites charter and other evidence that indicates that Ralph's father William de Albini Brito was the uncle of "Helias de Albini Brito" and the latter's brothers Euen or Iwain (probably = Eudo) de Albini Brito and Geoffre de Chauvigne; and further that Helias and his wife Hawise had sons named Ralph and Oliver. (No mention of Philip/Philippe.) Third, in a series of December 2009 posts in Rootsweb's Gen-Medieval archives, John P. Ravilious and his correspondents not only cite but quote the same (and additional) charters and other evidence, resulting in the same conclusions as Keats-Rohan. They add, however, that Elias was not only the father of Ralph (of Ingleby, d. ca 1206) and Oliver (of Enderby), but also of Philip (as a younger son) and furthermore Marchisius (a cleric) and John. What are we to make of all this?
