The Gruchys of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland


This tree is based upon research by Dr A W Jones, of St John`s, Newfoundland, by Mr James Tremillis and from Marlene Finn`s WikiTree online research, to whom we are indebted. James Tremillis also discovered the following marriage, which is likely to be significant:

"Philippe de Gruchy married Marie Picot, Pouch Cove, 1774"

Were the couple to have had descendants in Pouch Cove, for them to have dropped the de would be understandable in the light of frequent attacks on Newfoundland in the many wars of that time, by American privateers aiding the French. Pouch Cove is in a predominantly English-speaking part of the Island

Dr Jones also mentioned that isolated, often only seasonally-occupied, fishing settlements, had neither church nor resident minister. Their weddings and baptisms were performed by itinerant ministers arriving and leaving by boat, who will have jotted down in notebooks ceremonies performed. It is unsurprising that these records have gaps and omissions

  2. ↑ Fisherman, Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. Mr James Tremillis, who also worked on this genealogy, has placed John Gruchy, husband of Martha, as being the son of John and Anne (generation 1) and estimated his date of birth at about 1803. He has also identified John junior as a brother of David

  27. ↑ Probably the Philip John Gruchy/Grouchy of Pouch Cove, who was one of The First Five Hundred recruited by the Newfoundland Patriotic Association on the 12th August 1914, who as `The Blue Puttees`, from their regiment`s initial use of navy blue, would serve in WW1 as the Newfoundland Regiment, later The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Philip John, unlike so many of his valorous fellow-Newfoundlanders, survived the war
