The Gruchys of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland

The Gruchys of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland
This tree is based upon research by Dr A W Jones, of St John`s, Newfoundland, by Mr James Tremillis and from Marlene Finn`s WikiTree online research, to whom we are indebted. James Tremillis also discovered the following marriage, which is likely to be significant:
"Philippe de Gruchy married Marie Picot, Pouch Cove, 1774"
Were the couple to have had descendants in Pouch Cove, for them to have dropped the de would be understandable in the light of frequent attacks on Newfoundland in the many wars of that time, by American privateers aiding the French. Pouch Cove is in a predominantly English-speaking part of the Island
Dr Jones also mentioned that isolated, often only seasonally-occupied, fishing settlements, had neither church nor resident minister. Their weddings and baptisms were performed by itinerant ministers arriving and leaving by boat, who will have jotted down in notebooks ceremonies performed. It is unsurprising that these records have gaps and omissions
Abbreviations used include PC for Pouch Cove

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references
- ↑ Resident in 1815 of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland, as “John Grishy”
- ↑ Fisherman, Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. Mr James Tremillis, who also worked on this genealogy, has placed John Gruchy, husband of Martha, as being the son of John and Anne (generation 1) and estimated his date of birth at about 1803. He has also identified John junior as a brother of David
- ↑ Fisherman; “son of John and Mary”. In fact, the only known John in the previous generation was the husband of Martha—a clerical error easily made by an itinerant pastor, using pocket books as registers
- ↑ As a Widower, aged 52
- ↑ Of Pouch Cove, Fisherman. Note as to placement, see above
- ↑ Settled in Toronto
- ↑ Fisherman, of Pouch Cove. His parentage is definite, being known from his surviving baptismal record, in 1815
- ↑ Some accounts suggest Ann`s maiden name was Greeley. This may have been a misreading of her married name

- ↑ Of Chester, Pennsylvania; Printer. His Death Certificate describes the deceased as "William John de Grouchy, also [known as] William Grouchy, one and same person." In an example of the uncertainty as to origins, felt by many third and fourth generation settlers in the "New World," William John`s family supplied accurate and useful details for his 1942 Death Certificate, regarding his parents` names and his own place of birth, but thought that his Newfoundland-born father, Francis, was French! --Pennsylvania, U.S., Death Certificates, 1906-70
- ↑ Aged 21, a Manufacturing Foreman, whose Usual Occupation: Magazine editor and writer, living in Germantown, Pennsylvania
- ↑ Salesman in 1950 US Census, Philadelphia
- ↑ Graduate of Lehigh University; Lieutenant, U.S. Navy, during WW2 : Lancaster New Era, (Lancaster, Pennsylvania), 6th January 1951, Marriages

- ↑ Probably the Philip John Gruchy/Grouchy of Pouch Cove, who was one of The First Five Hundred recruited by the Newfoundland Patriotic Association on the 12th August 1914, who as `The Blue Puttees`, from their regiment`s initial use of navy blue, would serve in WW1 as the Newfoundland Regiment, later The Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Philip John, unlike so many of his valorous fellow-Newfoundlanders, survived the war
- ↑ Fisherman. He was probably a nephew of John Gruchy (c1777-1842), generation 1
