Thomas Berteau (1819-1904)is a little known Jersey-born Victorian artist. He was the eldest son of Jean and Jane Berteau, nee Grellier.
The Berteau family was shown living in Broad Street, St Helier in the 1841 census. Jean was recorded as having been of independent means and his wife was a milliner. Thomas was already shown as an artist. He had younger brothers Francis and John and sisters Jane, Eliza and Lavinia.
He married Ann Le Marquand, and their three sons, Charles, Walter Thomas and Edmund, were born in 1850, 1857 and 1861 respectively.
Portraits of his father and mother, his wife and a number of 'Jersey society' sitters are in the collection of La Société Jersiaise.
