Historic Environment Record entry

Listed building

A pair of distinct circa 1850 properties retaining many original features and contributing to townscape character as part of a group. High quality mid-19th century interior features are retained.

No 1 is two-storey plus basement, three bays, one set back with the entrance, set in a private drive.

The staircase hall is reached through a shallow arch with classical timber imposts. The open mahogany staircase has a round handrail returning in a horizontal spiral, turned balusters, and appliqué to risers c1850. All doors are 4 panel but the dining dividers to the main front, rear (piano-nobile) rooms are lost, the opening now framed with an arch. These main piano-nobile rooms have coved ceilings with large rosettes. One room has a marble chimney-piece with scroll, shell supports but with a tiled, arched circa 1930s grate. The other fireplace is 19th century French, introduced from elsewhere. The upper level chimney pieces are slate, one is now painted and has a late C19 grate, the other has a modern tiled fire insert; both have built-in flanking cupboards. The basement (once the kitchen, service area) has a matching mahogany staircase but without the flourished handrail and with plain stick balusters. There are no other original features to record.
