Families associated with the property
- Langlois: In 1941 Charles William Langlois (1891- ) and his son Hedley Charles Langlois (1923- ) were living here
- Mauger: When the Rev Samuel Wright, Rector of St John, died in June 1863, he left everything in his will to his wife, Marie Le Gallais. Samuel’s nephew, Edward Mauger, owner of Ville au Bas Cottage, argued that his uncle’s will was not valid as it had not been dated properly, and should therefore be declared null and void. Edward brought a case to the Royal Court, claiming that he should become Samuel’s principal heir.
- Between December 1863 and November 1865 the Inferior Number and then the Superior Number of the Royal Court heard and dismissed Edward’s case. Not satisfied, in 1867 Edward took his case to the Privy Council, who affirmed the judgments of the Royal Court and dismissed the appeal ‘with costs’. In 1870, Edward was registered as bankrupt and the heirs of Marie, who died in 1864 while the court case was in progress, were named his tenants après décrets and assumed his debts and property, including Ville au Bas Cottage.
