Vire

Vire is one of the largest towns in the Department of Calvados in Lower Normandy. It was reduced to rubble by Allied shelling in the days following D-Day in 1944 as the Germans clung on to possession of a strategic town at the crossroads of the routes south from St Lo and Caen, just 60 kilometres south of the landing beaches. Vire is just up the road from Jerripedia editor Mike Bisson's Normandy home.
