Built by Francis Benest sometime between 1839, when he purchased the land, and 1843, when the property was sold to Jeanneton Picot, Zelzah House has had a few names in its history, the earliest of which was Marine Cottage; and Marion. The property went though a number of owners in the 19th century before being bought by the Le Brun family in 1898. They appear to be the first owners to actually live at the property.

In the 1911 Census, Lydia Le Brun was shown running a small private house school, referred to as Zelzah House School, at the house. Alongside larger parish schools, such as First Tower School (established in 1865), smaller house schools were popular for children, particularly girls from more rural communities.

Lydia Le Brun had been a student at the Sorbonne in Paris and appears to have been particularly interested in new developments in education, notably the use of dumb-bells in exercise.

The total student body at Zelzah House School was around 30-40 children (aged 5-8), primarily made up of local girls, though in 1927 the school also included at least 7 boys including Denis and Vivien ‘Bob’ Vibert, and Bob Le Sueur
