From August 2020 we have started adding records from non-Anglican churches, and this process will continue as more records, held by Jersey Archive, are digitised and indexed. Our database now includes buttons enabling a search within registers of Roman Catholic, Methodist and other non-conformist churches. These records will automatically appear within the results of any search made from this page.

Origins of surname

The name is found mainly in departments of south France. Despite the identical pronunciation it is not seen by our French sources as a variant of Barreau. Barrot is said to be a diminuitive of barre, but it is not at all clear how it became a surname. It could be derived from the word for a small ridge, or from the Occitan for a brick, but none of this helps much in determining how it became a surname.

Early records

We previously indicated that the name arrived in Jersey in 1843, when the birth of Charles, son of Louis, son of Jacques, and Marie Marett, daughter of Philippe, was registered. Charles emigrated to Victoria, Australia, where he died. Louis came to the island from St Lo in Normandy, and married Marie on 15 January 1841 in St Helier. Their seven children were all born in St Lawrence, with the exception of the second, born in neighbouring St John.

However, we subsequently became aware of the birth and baptism of John Philippe Barrot in St Helier in July 1813. He was the son of Bernabe Barrot and Jeanne, nee Gallichan

Family businesses

Annie Jane Barrot (1877-1916), daughter of Charles and Ann Marie, emigrated to Australia in 1885 with her parents and siblings Wesley, Charles and Louisa, arriving in Melbourne on the ship Petosi. Another sister, Lily Victoria, and brother Gilbert George died at birth in Victoria, before a brother George Louis was born and lived to the age of 65. Annie Jane's father died in 1898. She married Edward James Bridge in Victoria the following year, but he died in 1901, the year after their daughter Elizabeth was born. Two years later Annie Jane, then a laundress, married again, to John Frederick Green in Boulder, Western Australia. They had two daughters, Magdeline and Myra Louisa, and a son John Charles, in Menzies, WA. John Frederic and Annie Jane were running the Oceanic Hotel in Fremantle, WA, in 1916, but she died the same year

New records
