Church Street
Church Street

Church Street in 1936
Church Street is a short stretch of road running from Mulcaster Street between the front entrance of the States Buildings and the Town Church. At its junction with Vine Street it becomes Library Place until the junction with Broad Street. The advertisements on this page and the almanac listings show what a diverse range of businesses traded from here in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today the street has very little commercial activity
It was previously known as Rue du Cimetiere, and also as Rue Trousse Cotillon. The latter translates raoughly as 'road to lift up petticoats', a reference to the hazardous, very muddy conditions which ladies with long dresses would encounter when leaving the church to cross to the Royal Square in winter
