Mauger family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Merchant and shipowner. At the time of the 1851 census, he was living in St Peter in the next property after La Fosse, which agrees with the “C. Mauger” at La Retraite, on Hugh Godfray`s Map of Jersey (1849). The house and outbuildings now house a flourishing dental practice, La Retraite Jersey Dental Care. The entry reads to the effect that he was a 55 year-old Farmer of 30 acres, this being about 73 Jersey vergees, and was also a shipowner. With him, was his 59 year-old wife Rachel, their daughter having by then married, whilst their son having also married, had moved away to St Lawrence. They had three female servants living at the house and employed a further two female servants and two men, the latter presumably working on the farm. The 1841 census shows several properties listed together under the heading “Parochial Place [no doubt alluding to the Parish Hall] called La Fosse,” which evidently includes Le Retraite. In the list are Charles Mauger and Rachel, the former being a shipowner, and their son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Sophia, Charles being a mariner, and one female servant. By 1861, La Retraite had been either sold or let, and Charles, a merchant, was living nearby as a widower, with his son`s in-laws Le Couteur, at Nonpareil on St Peter`s Main Road. Finally, he was listed in the parish in 1871 as a 74 year-old widower, an annuitant, his place of birth being given as Guernsey, which agrees with his 1851 census return which gives St Peter Port as his place of birth. John Jean, in Jersey Sailing Ships (Chichester: Phillimore & Co., 1982), 118, supplies the dates for Charles Mauger`s shipping firm, 1832-1863. Afterwards, the ships are included with those of Edouard Esnouf, as “Esnouf & Mauger”
  2. Charles and Rachel`s daughter, also named Rachel, had for godparents in 1819, Me Jean Le Feuvre and Mse Jeanne de Caen, his mother, the infant`s “uncle and maternal grandmother.” Jean Le Feuvre senr., of St Ouen, had married Jeanne de Caen, of the same parish, in 1786, at St Saviour. They subsequently settled in St Helier
  3. Of La Chaumiere, Rue de Haut, St Lawrence, Master Mariner and merchant, 1851-1871. His record in his youthful employment as a mariner is striking. His first ship was the newly built 114 ton brig St Peter, owned and no doubt named by his father and his then partner, Du Feu. He served on this vessel from 1832-1836 as "Apprentice, seaman and Mate", achieving the latter rank by the age of 20. He then transferred to his father`s 124 ton schooner Lord Anson as Master, at the same age, serving in this capacity from 1836-1837. From then until 1841, he was master of his father`s 175 ton brig Centurion, whose previous master was Edouard Esnouf. There followed nine years in which Charles jr. was no doubt ashore in his father`s business, before returning to sea as master of their 432 ton full-rigged ship Lutchmi in 1850. His Master`s Certificate was No. 44,333. From 1851, he remained ashore as a merchant. In partnership with his brother-in-law, as Messrs. Esnouf & Mauger, he owned in 1866 six sailing ships, five of which were in the Foreign Trade. After the 1873 Jersey bank crashes, so adversely affecting trade, in the census of 1881, he is described as "Merchant and Farmer of 13 acres." By 1891, he had become a “Timber merchant, steam saw mill proprietor and farmer”, illustrating both the adaptability of native Jerseymen and the decline of the local shipping industry: UK and Ireland, Masters and Mates Certificates, 1850-1927, at www.ancestry.co.uk; Jersey Shipping Lists in relevant almanacs and directories; church registers; UK Censuses, Jersey. Charles died in June 1891, not long after the census in that year
  4. Farmer of 33 vergees, of Nonpareil (now demolished), the garden of which once adjoined the current Co-op garage. Charles`s godparents in 1817 were Mr John Woolcock, acting for Me Jean Mauger and Mse Anne Vaudin, his wife, being the infant`s uncle and aunt
  5. Master Mariner; obtained his Second Mate`s certificate in 1864, Only Mate`s certificate in 1866 and was by the date of his marriage (1872) a Master Mariner
  6. Shipowner
  7. Of Sandringham, Colomberie and formerly of 31, Clarendon Road, St Helier, where he lived before marriage, with his widowed mother, maternal aunts Albina and Ada Esnouf, and his sister Lilian. In 1901, he had been a clerk at a saw mill, probably that of his uncle, Ernest Esnouf. He was latterly a Boarding House keeper, this being his home, Sandringham House
  8. Of The Grange, Grouville [Hill], Fruit Grower, employer: Censuses 1891, 1901 and 1911
  9. Volunteer in WW1 and afterwards Merchant Seaman, before settling in Australia. Harold Mauger, no doubt keen to serve, volunteered for service on 30/6/1917, stating that he was aged 18 years and 5 days, which would give 1899 as his year of birth. His address was 22, Clanricarde Gdns., Bayswater, London W2; his next of kin: Germaine Mauger, mother, of that address. His Medical Board examination shows that he was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, his height was 5 foot 7 inches, his physical condition fair, weight 115 lbs. and that he was of perfect eye sight. His occupation was given as shorthand typist. He was posted as Private, 44th Training Reserve Bn., no doubt pending the outcome of a query. The outcome was, at a different time and hand, written across his original papers, over his stated age, that it was: "Actual age claimed. Birth Certificate shows 22/11/1902..age 15 years". He therefore actually served 112 days and was "Discharged under King`s Regulations having made a [false] statement as to his age on enlistment"! He joined the Merchant Navy and emigrated to Australia in 1923
  10. OV. Schoolmaster in England, then ordained. Rector of St Mary, 1896-1918; Rector of Trinity, 1918-1934
  11. Godparents: Charles Mauger and Rachel Le Feuvre, who were the child`s grandparents
  12. Captain, Militia. He had initially been sent to sea, gaining his 2nd Mate`s Certificate in 1869. The decrease in his family`s involvement in shipping in the early 1870s may have influenced his decision to remain ashore. His godparents had been Edouard Esnouf and Rachel Mauger, his wife
  13. Master Mariner and Shipbuilder, as Esnouf & Mauger, of 65, Esplanade, St Helier
  14. Master Mariner
  15. Buried 27/6/1849, aged 70 years 3 months, “Widow of the late Capitaine Jean Mauger"
  16. Godmother: Elizabeth Laurens, great-aunt, wife of Jean Le Quesne
