Families associated with the property
- Giffard?: A dated stone on an outhouse has the initials "NG" which, at this period in St Peter, is likely to have represented a Giffard, perhaps a Noe or Nicolas Giffard.
- Mauger: Charles Mauger (1795- ), a native of St Peter Port, Guernsey, settled in St Peter, in this Island, on marrying in 1816 Rachel Le Feuvre. A shipowner from 1832, he became in 1847 a partner in Esnouf and Mauger, Shipbuilders and owners. He and Rachel appear to have been living at La Retraite well before 1841, when their names feature in a list of those living in the road, in that year`s UK Census. In that of 1851, Charles was described as "Freehold farmer of 30 acres, [being about 70 vergees], employing 2 male servants and 5 female servants. Also shipowner," from which one gathers that, at this date, the ships were perhaps equally his son`s responsibility. The two male servants will have worked on the farm with some of the female staff. Charles and Rachel employed within the house 3 female servants.
This was clearly a traditional farm house of an earlier date, that was adapted and enlarged to suit the Maugers. The Victorian crenelation matches exactly that of the home of their son, Charles Mauger junior, La Chaumiere, Rue de Haut, St Lawrence, and may have been the work of the same builder.
