Descendants of Edouard Nicolle and Jeanne Neel - 2

This tree, sent to us by a Canadian Nicolle descendant and added in June 2017, is a second version of our older tree, Descendants of Edouard Nicolle and Jeanne Neel. The top generations 5 to 8 of the tree have been revised and augmented in 2021 and further in 2024 by Guy Dixon but the first two generations need verification from the Jersey Land Registry. Godparents in the early generations suggest an origin, perhaps, on the St John and Trinity border. This tree and Descendants of Philippe Nicolle do not appear to have been, in the late-18th century, closely connected

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references
- ↑ Godparents: Jean Nicolle and Elizabeth Evry, his wife. The couple may be relevant to further research on this branch`s earlier genealogy, so the following information may be relevant. Their children`s baptismal entries were particularly useful regarding the father`s lineage. The couple married in St John in 1730, this being given as Jean`s parish and St Lawrence that of his English wife. Their first child, Henry, was baptized in St John, as were the others, in 1732, being described as (translated) the "son of Jean Nicolle, son of Jean, son of Jean". Their second son, Jean (1734) was "son of Jean Nicolle, son of Jean, son of Jean, son of Thomas. The latter may turn out to have been the Thomas Nicolle baptized in St John in 1621, the son of "Jean Nicolle, son of Guillaume". Thomas`s mother described, at her son`s baptism, as merely Marie will have been the Marie Pauline (sic) who married Thomas`s father Jean Nicolle in 1611. Marie Every was the daughter of Thomas Avery (sic) and Elizabeth Osborne, his wife
- ↑ Godmother and aunt of her nephew Philippe Nicolle, son of Philippe, in 1769
- ↑ Tentative placement, no doubt resulting from one of this name being a godmother, described as an aunt, of a child of Clement Nicolle and Jeanne Pinel. However, the term frequently also included great-aunts

- ↑ Major, St Lawrence Battalion, Militia. He was living in St Saviour by 1841 (Census) at Retreat Farm; Farmer
- ↑ Farming 14 acres in 1861 (St Saviour Census) at The Retreat (sic), St Saviour. He became a partner in the Jersey Banking Company in 1877, on the departure of William Philippe de Gruchy, becoming in the same year a Jurat. His latter years were marred by bitterness at the bank`s crash, regarded as the worst financial disaster to have hit Jersey. He apparently blamed his late wife`s mother, Sophia de la Perrelle (1798-1888), for his having become associated with Jersey`s Canadian fisheries, being the firms that had largely contributed to the bank crash: Jane Edwards, in `My Dear Mary Ann`, Letters from Gaspé, (Jersey Heritage Trust, online). See also Abraham de Gruchy. His surprising change of career, from farmer to bank director, was due, it seems, to his late father-in-law, Francois Bertram (1790-1867), having been a former partner (1850-1863) in the bank. Nicolle represented, therefore, the Bertrams` remaining interest in the bank. He does not seem to have had any personal banking experience and had no knowledge of the Canadian fisheries, upon which the bank largely depended. In common with the other two directors, Philip du Heaume and William Laurence de Gruchy, he had little control over the bank`s manager, Philip Gosset, who was subsequently imprisoned for embezzlement and fraud. No blame was attached to Nicolle or the other two directors
