Descendants of Jean Filleul

The Rev Samuel Edward Valpy Filleul (1855-1931), author of Filleuls Past and Present
This tree [1], added in 2014, supersedes Descendants of John Filleul and Descendants of Jehan Filleul both of which have now been deleted. This tree draws on both those trees, a further submitted tree, and parish church registers. Descendants of Jehan Filleul showed four earlier generations, going back to Normandy, in France, and a descendancy of successive Maires of Rouen in the 13th and 14th century, from whom it is suggested that these Filleuls were descended. This descendency has been copied at the bottom of this page
A limited review in 2021 resulted in the addition of some further details to this tree. A further review, after details in several lines at the bottom of the tree were challenged, resulted in the removal of a short branch which further research suggests does not fit into this tree.
A detailed review of Filleul trees in 2023 by Mike Bisson resulted in the addition at generation 6 of an earlier marriage of Philippe (1649-1726). We believe that this is correct and that the former placement of this marriage in Descendants of Jacques Filleul was an error. However, further research will be carried out to confirm the changes.
A major review by Pam Hislop in 2025 identified a substantial branch which did not belong in this tree. It has been moved to a new tree - Descendants of Thomas Filleul.

Samuel Edward Valpy Filleul and his wife Mary, known in the family as Polly
Filleul family page and links to other trees
In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references
- ↑ The Grouville section of this tree - see generation 2 notes -needs its 16th and 17th century history to be extracted from court records and the online Jersey Land Registry, which can also be studied at Jersey Archive. This would assist in avoiding the endless ambiguity of church records. As the majority of the Island`s Filleuls are descended from this stem, such a project would be most worthwhile
- ↑ John Filleul of Grouville owed the Crown 4½ quartiers of annual wheat, as recorded in the 1528 Extente, and for herbage in that parish, a further 2 sous, 1½ deniers. It seems likely that, despite the long-established belief that he was a resident of St Clement, he was of Grouville, as was his elder son
- ↑ Jeanette`s father was given as Jean Averty in Payne's Armorial of Jersey. This was discovered to be incorrect by Filleul family historian, Samuel Filleul. The approximate dates of death in generation 1, are also his
- ↑ Ainé or elder son, described as "probable ancestor of the Filleuls of Grouville": citing the family historian, Samuel Filleul, in correction of Payne's Armorial of Jersey. Filleul gives the first name of Thomas`s wife as being Jeanne. That Thomas was the probable ancestor of the Grouville Filleuls, is almost certainly borne out by that parish`s earliest surviving baptismal register (1584). In the generation immediately following his own there was in Grouville, first, Jean Filleul (1550- ), the father of the Jean who married in 1607 Marie Anthoine. They had six children, including sons Jean (1613), Jacques (1616) and Richard (1618). Second, there was Clement Filleul, husband of Katherine ( -1617), whose married son Jean died in 1620 and third, Collas Filleul (1550- ), father of the Jean who married in about 1595 Michelle Monamy ( -1606), daughter of Noel. They had issue Magdaleine (who married Regnault Alexandre), Elizabeth (1598) and Thomas (1601). Likely grandchildren of Thomas, in Grouville, included Jacques Filleul, his brother Bastien (1580-1615) (see register 5/1616), Bastien having married in 1610 Susanne Nicolle daughter of Jacques, Yvon (1570-1616) and Samuel ( -1610). These all married and continued the descent: See Grouville marriage entry of Jean Filleul (1607); Grouville baptismal entry of Elizabeth Filleul (1598), and RP 7/142 (1625), Jersey Land Registry
- ↑ Francois bought land in 1573 on the Fief du Hommet, in St Clement, and in 1593 bought further land in that parish, on the Fief de Crapdoit, Mare de Samares. His land at Samares may have led to the belief that his father had also owned this and had lived in the vicinity. Many of Francois' descendants, from this date, lived in St Clement
- ↑ Of St Clement: Buried October 1647, Clement Filleul senior, son of Francois
- ↑ Of Grouville by 1619, when his daughter Marie was baptised: "Marie, daughter of Jean Filleul, son of Clement, and Marie, his wife". Aaron Baudains was the godfather
- ↑ Godmother in 1640 of Magdeleine Mollet, twin daughter of Thomas Mollet and Magdeleine Le Haguais of Grouville, and described as the daughter of Clement Filleul
- ↑ Deacon of St Clement; buried July 1647, Jean Filleul, son of Francois, Deacon
- ↑ Baptism not found, as it predates the earliest surviving St Clement parish register (1623). The date of birth shown for Philippe on this page is estimated, as also are those of others in generations 1 to 3. The estimated dates of birth shown for generations 1 to 4, revised in 2025, now agree well with those of the parent stock, shown in the second genealogy, at the foot of this page
- ↑ His baptism reads: Philippe, son of Philippe Filleul, and presented by Jean Filleul, his father and Elizabeth Amy, widow of Thomas Godfray. The infant`s godfather died the following year
- ↑ St Clement Centenier
- ↑ Centenier and Constable of St Clement
- ↑ Constable of Grouville
- ↑ To England
- ↑ To England
- ↑ Sisters married brothers
- ↑ No issue found. No burial found
- ↑ Constable of St Clement and Captain (1770), East Regiment, Militia, who fought in the Battle of Jersey (1781)
- ↑ Of Maupertuis, St Clement, a property long held by this branch of Filleuls. It was sold in 1822 to Charles Coutanche. Philippe Filleul was Lieutenant of Batteries, Militia
- ↑ Baptism not found
