Alexandre family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Fouageur of Trinity, 1579-82. For his probable parents, see Descendants of Jean Alexandre - 4 The forename Leonard was comparatively rare in Jersey at this time. He was the only Leonard Alexandre. As such, he did not need distinguishing from any namesake in legal documents, by the addition of a father`s name. Leonard, in common with Regnauld Alexandre and his son Richard, of the above family, faced difficulties with the then affluent Trinity Le Boutilliers. In 1573 he had bought part of the inheritance of François Le Boutillier, son of Collas. By 1585 Jean Le Boutillier son of Philippe had acquired "all or part of the inheritance," probably that of Francois Le Boutillier, then in the possession of Leonard. This was doubtless the same Jean Le Boutillier, son of Philippe who, in 1607 was purchasing assets from Richard Alexandre- RP 2/132. Regnauld, Leonard and Richard Alexandre were not the only Alexandres entangled at that time with the Le Boutilliers. On 22 September 1597, there appeared before the Cour d`Héritage, featuring on the same page of the court rolls as Leonard Alexandre, Servais Alexandre. He had sold part of his inheritance to Philippe Le Boutillier, son of Jean. Leonard had sold to Jean Le Boutillier, son of Philippe, what was, in this new action, clearly stated as part of his inheritance. What gave rise to the 1597 action was that the Le Boutilliers had apparently conducted these purchases, whether of land or rentes without involving Gilles Lemprière, Seigneur du Fieu Noble de la Trinité, on whose fief the Alexandre land was situated. The dispute probably arose in Regnauld Alexandre`s generation, being continued, or resolved, by what seem to have been his three sons
  2. RP 2/343 (1609) La maison et messuage qui furent à Leonard Alexandre et à Jeanne, sa femme
  3. Mentioned in his daughter's marriage record as having died by 1615. Philippe is mentioned as the son of Leonard in several legal documents, such as RP 2/285 (1608)
  4. RP 3/33 (1609)
  5. Fouageur of Trinity, 1630. His forename was also that used by the descendants of Jean Alexandre of Trinity. The property of Regnauld`s branch of the Trinity Alexandres was that now called Beaulieu in the Vingtaine of Rozel. The house was largely rebuilt in the early 19th century
  6. The family name of the bride is unclear in the Trinity register. Deeds clarify that it is Filleul and also give her parents
  7. Colas Filleul of Grouville was either son or brother of Thomas Filleul, of the same parish. His name is given in the Grouville baptism of Magdaleine`s sister Elizabeth Filleul in 1598, who is described as being the "daughter of Jean Filleul, son of Collas, and of Michelle, his wife." Her godfather was Louis Monamy
  8. RP 7/142 (1625). Regnauld and his wife were still living in 1651. RP 14/376 (1651): Regnauld Alexandre fils Philippe et Magdaleine Filleul, sa femme constitueront Josué Alexandre, leur fils, leur procureur"
  9. Josué, at the time of making his will of personalty, dated 23 September 1691, had only one surviving son, who had thus no need of being named, by whom Josué had an elder grandson, to whom he left his bed. Josué's son, Clément, had such a family. This is important as it establishes that his son Jean had predeceased him and was not the Jean Alexandre who, in 1704, married Jeanne [Le] Gallais, going on to father with her a family in the south of Trinity. This Jean Alexandre was a part of the Grouville family, which had settled in the mid-17th century in Mont au Prêtre, St Helier, as attested by his children`s godparents` names. This family was represented in the mid-19th century by the heirs of Jean Le Breton and Betty, nee Alexandre
  10. Of Les Vaux, St Martin
  11. Philippe Le Cornu, son of Philippe, son of Isaac lived in the vicinity of St Ouen's church. His land lay partly on the Fief Haubert and partly on that of St Hilaire
  12. Of Beaulieu
  13. Grandparents of Abraham de Gruchy, merchant and founder of A de Gruchy and Co
  14. Master mariner, privateer captain and merchant. He was the owner in 1753 of the brig, formerly a sloop, Gratitude. A case before the Cour du Samedi, dated 14 September 1754, was Alexandre`s action against his brother-in-law Jean Le Geyt, son of Jean. Eight cows belonging to Le Geyt had been shipped to England in October 1753 aboard the Gratitude, but the invoice in the sum of 53 Livres, 6 sols and 8 deniers, had yet to be paid. Alexandre commanded, between 1756 and 1758, the privateers Union and Revenge. A ship he owned in his own right is recorded as arriving in 1757 from Southampton with a cargo of barley - J Jean Jersey Sailing Ships,. Jean records Alexandre as a privateer captain 1756-1763, supplying the dates of that particular war, rather than of Alexandre's career, as the latter died, perhaps from injuries received in action, in 1758. His Letter of Marque, one of the earliest surviving in Jersey, is dated 4 June 1756 and is reproduced in A C Saunders' Jersey in the 18th and 19th Centuries, This book describes the Revenge as of 30 tons, with four cannons, six swivel guns and 30 men. Mention is then made that on 27 July 1756, Captain Alexandre captured a prize worth £10,000, and later on several others
  15. Of Bloomfield, son of Jean Alexandre, her cousin
  16. Godparents were Josué Alexandre, Grandpere and Marie Messervy Grandemere
  17. She married second Hugh Dupont of Vieux Ménage, Dénonciateur of the Royal Court, 1785-90
  18. Of Vieux Ménage, Maufant; Captain, 2nd (or North) Regiment of Militia (1789). The sale of Susanne`s paternal property is recorded in RP 89/167 (1799) Susanne Alexandre fille et seule héritière de feu Me Charles Alexandre and femme de Mons Hugh Dupont bailla...une maison Beaulieu...present Mse Susanne Le Gros, veuve en premières noces dudit Me Charles Alexandre. Fields that were named in the contract include Les Parquets and Le Clos à Brébis. The price of the property was 44 Quartiers 3 cabots in wheat rente. The purchaser, Philippe Du Pont, brother of Hugh, then sold the property in 1800 to Elie Stark son of Jean, who in his turn sold it in 1832 to Edmond Le Cornu, who sold it in 1834 to his brother-in-law, George [Philippe] Le Brun, in which family it still remains. For many years, between the remarriage of Susanne Le Gros, widow of the last Charles Alexandre, and 1834, Beaulieu was either let or unoccupied, as a contract in the possession of the Le Brun family mentions it as being in a ruinous state, necessitating considerable repairs and rebuilding
  19. George Nicolle is shown as the owner, in right of his wife, of Vieux Ménage, St Saviour, on Godfray's Map of Jersey, (1848). Their initials and date: GNC SDP 1826 are engraved on the property
  20. In 1811 Philippe Le Ruez, Captain (Militia Batteries), bought Les Ruettes, St John, (the property of the late Miss Jean Arthur), where Sophie Rachel`s herb garden can still be seen
  21. Settled in St Saviour
  22. Of Longfields, Rozel
  23. The will of her sister Jeanne, widow of Jean Le Boeuf, dated 7 September 1844, when she was aged 86, and proved on 1 October 1844, mentions Susanne as still living. A burial of Susanne Alexandre in St Saviour, where she lived, aged 68, does, however, seem to match her age
  24. Of Don Street and Belmont Road, with a property at Commercial Buildings; builder and builders' merchant. Their Don Street home, that had the builder`s yard behind it, is now called Westaway Chambers. Hidden now by the words Westaway Chambers, is an engraved stone bearing the Westaways' initials: "?NW : AALX" with a date. They were the parents of Julia Westaway (1820-1901), philanthropist and founder of Le Don Westaway and of John Nathaniel Westaway (1812-1870) merchant and Seigneur of the Fief ès Débénaires. He died in 1870 with the loss of the Normandy, declining a lifeboat seat while women and children were still aboard. His monument overlooks St Helier Harbour, at the foot of Mount Bingham
  25. Parents of Thomas de Gruchy, master mariner and privateer owner, 1793-1825
  27. Buried as Marie Cabot, widow of Jean Alexandre - a clerical error
  28. Of Rozel Vingtaine
  29. Initials and date engraved at Bloomfield, Victoria Village: CALX 1820. A case before the CH (1795) established that Charles was the elder son of Jean Alexandre and Anne Le Maistre, with younger siblings Jean and Philippe
  30. Buried as wife of Charles Alexandre
  31. Privateer captain and merchant
  32. Buried as Charles Alexandre jnr. A Trinity memorial records his age as 23

  36. Merchant (1872)
  37. Deputy Inspector-General, Medical Department, Natal, South Africa
  38. Lieutenant de Cavalerie Polonaise. Two memorial inscriptions at Trinity feature members of this Alexandre family, including that of Jeanne Marie, showing her husband`s armorial bearings
  39. Master mariner and privateer owner
  40. Of Clos Durell, Trinity
  41. RP 93/111 show Jean, who was alive in 1800, to have died by 1801. He had settled in St Helier and is likely to have been the Jean, a Charles Robin and Company master mariner, (1790-2)
  42. Lived in St Saviour 1789-96, and then in Augrès, Trinity; Sergeant in the Militia (1815)
  43. Sister of Abraham de Gruchy, above
  44. Farmer of 20 acres, 1851. The Alexandre seafaring tradition continued in the Blampied family. Of Charles and Elizabeth`s five sons, four were mariners, two of whom were masters. Captain Frederick Alexandre Blampied (1858-1900) had the misfortune to hit rocks off La Corbière in 1900, when master of the Rossgull. He died in the shipwreck. It has been suggested that their son Jean Blampied, was a master mariner from the age of 14, according to the UK and Ireland Masters` and Mates` Certificates, which provide his year of birth, 1819. This cannot be the same person if his parents married in 1809
  45. Master mariner
  46. Master mariner (1821-33) and ship owner, as Alexandre and Company, engaged in the carrying trade for the Canadian cod fisheries. He and his ship were lost on a voyage from Pernambuco to Newfoundland, 1833, with the entire crew (Jersey Shipping Register, 1835)

  52. Settled at Castlemaine, Victoria
  53. Of Mont à L`Abbé, Jersey, farmer. His widow was declared bankrupt on 15 September 1851
  54. Currier
  55. All the children of Jean Alexandre and Marie Coutanche were adversely affected by their parents` insolvency. Elizabeth is mentioned in the Décret (1851)
  56. Described in bankruptcy hearings as elder son. He appears to have left the Island not long afterwards
  57. His memorial inscription, St Helier, records that he was "52 years a resident of the USA and served with active interest throughout the Civil War, 1861-1866"; Died at St Helier on a visit to his native Island
  58. 1851 Census, Grouville: landed proprietor and farmer at Profonde Arène, Fonds de Longueville
  59. Master mariner (-1833-) and ship owner; Captain Militia. Following the death at sea of his brother Philippe, he continued the latter`s Alexandre and Company. His first vessel was the 93-ton schooner, Alexander, built for him by Deslandes. Two years afterwards he went into partnership with John Carré, as Carré and Alexandre (1835-1852), ship owners, owning a total of eight vessels in the carrying trade associated with Gaspé and Newfoundland. In retirement he lived at Rouge Bouillon and was a Militia captain. A benefactor of La Société Jersiaise, he presented them with an ancient, engraved, Egyptian marble pillar, the procurement of which was the source of much debate within the family. For details as to his business character, see Abraham de Gruchy. He and his immediate family were buried at Old Mont à L`Abbé Cemetery
  60. Charles was brought up for the sea. He was awarded his first mate`s certificate on 23 May 1854, but died three years later, at Weymouth
  61. He was probably the child of Philippe Alexandre buried on 15 July 1807 at Trinity
  62. Philippe Alexandre m 3 (1823, Tr) Magdeleine Rachel Dorey
  63. Living 1841-51 in Grouville with her sister and brother-in-law, Philippe Journeaux
  64. Of Le Hurel, Croiserie. Bought from his maternal kinsman, Philippe Cabot, son of Jean, RP 48/58 (1763), with two fields, RP 47/214 (1763), formerly belonging to the vendor`s uncle, another Philippe Cabot. This Philippe Alexandre was in 1769 both farmer and shoemaker (ABSJ X111, 69]. On 28 September 1769, Alexandre was among those supporting Thomas James Gruchy and other leaders of the Trinity Revolt. This had arisen from discontent and suspicion of the small, inter-related 'junta', led by the Lemprières, that virtually ruled the Island at this time. Alleged manipulation of corn prices had been a `last straw`. At a meeting of the Royal Court on 25 January 1770, orders were given for the arrest of the ringleaders, among whom he was named and duly arrested, although little actually came of it, due to the influence of those appointed to examine the populace`s various grievances, which led to reform
  65. There is engraved at Le Hurel: PAL ERN 1764
  66. Settled in St Lawrence, 1782, at Coin Hâtain. The marriage register mentions that his wife was of St Lawrence and that Philippe was of Trinity
  67. Mariner, named after Moise de Ste Croix, his godfather
  68. A godfather was Aaron de Ste Croix
  69. Lived in St Helier. His will of personalty is dated 20 February 1801 and proved on 15 December 1810. Elizabeth Hocquard is called ma bien aimée épouse
  70. Veuve Jean
  71. Elizabeth`s baptism names her godfather as the merchant Nicolas Fiott
  72. Buried as Sally Alexandre, wife of Charles Sohier
  73. Charles Sohier had as godparents on 14 December 1788 his eldest brother, Pierre Sohier, and Marie Salmon, who married in 1790. The godparents featured in the next generation, that of Charles and Sara`s children (Sohier), are worthy of note in order to strengthen the case for both of the Alexandre/Sohier marriage placements. Among them were those of Jane in 1811: Douce Gaudin (widow of the first cousin of Sara`s late father, Jean Alexandre); those of Sally in 1818: Jean Alexandre, uncle, and Marie Sohier, and the godmother of Julie Jane Sohier in 1820: Jeanne Elizabeth Hocquard, (a member of her late grandmother`s family)
  74. On his marriage to Marie Sohier, he is described as Mons, a rank in Jersey that denotes some wealth or position. His son James` 1842 marriage entry states that Jean was a solicitor, which agrees with this rank. In later years the family experienced a dramatic downturn in fortune. Jean does not feature in either the 1841 or 1851 censuses, so had probably died by then. In that of 1851, St Helier, Marie Sohier was a widow
  75. Mary`s godparents were Pierre Sohier, grandfather et Marie Salmon, grandmother
  76. Elizabeth Sohier, tante was one of the godparents of Jean Alexandre
  77. Ann Elizabeth was in 1851 assisting her aunt, Jane Sohier, a lodging house keeper, of 17 Bond Street, and was herself in 1871 a lodging house keeper, with Sohier cousins, at Val Plaisant. She was unmarried
  78. Of Francis Street, St Helier, then of 15 Old St John`s Road, baker
  79. Present at his father's death
  80. Emigrated to Australia, 1886
  81. Emigrated to Australia, 1886
  82. The two William Alexandres, here and above, apart from their 11 month age gap, are distinguishable by their mothers' names, Marie and Elizabeth, being given in their respective birth records. Both mothers were, in 1851, general servants, perhaps working with or for their Sohier relatives, in their lodging house
  83. Settled in St Helier. His daughter Nancy`s second marriage entry (1853), gives his occupation as ropemaker
  84. Rachel`s sister, Nancy Alexandre, was a godparent in 1821 of her son, John Philips. In 1834, on the baptism of her son, Charles Philips, Nancy was again a godparent, albeit more formally described as Anne Alexandre, together with her husband, Thomas Malcott (represented by John Philips)
  85. Their marriage entry, St Saviour, gives her parish as Trinity, his as St Saviour. She was buried in St Helier, predeceasing her husband, who later remarried
  86. He was, in 1815, at sea, (Military Census). He was doubtless at this date a mariner
  87. Issue: Jenny Rachel Chevalier (1820-1823)
  88. Builder, of Petite Augrès, Trinity, in 1851. A Constable's Officer in 1841, he was later a housebuilder, of Town Mills, St Helier
