Descendants of Jean Messervy

The Rev James Alfred Messervy (1859-1921), Jersey`s foremost genealogist and antiquary

This is the earliest Messervy descendancy in Jerripedia. As with any tree going back into the 13th century, the earliest generations should be treated with a healthy degree of suspicion. The tree, first added in 2010 within days of the launch of the site, has been edited over 150 times since, and reviewed every year from 2019 to 2025

A further review by Mike Bisson in 2022 resulted in the addition of more dates and other information in the descent from Clement (1540-1577) at generation 9, a branch of the tree previously lacking in detail

This was followed by another extensive review by Guy Dixon at the end of 2022 and into 2023, which resulted in the addition of considerable details and a descendancy from Clement Messervy and Sarah Messervy at generation 16

Another review by Mike Bisson in 2024 resulted in the addition of a descent from Jean (1555- ), which is lacking in sources and contains suspicious age gaps in generations, and must be considered suspicious

Messervy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

  15. Of Linden Hall, Mont au Pretre, merchant and shipowner; Jurat 1754-1770. G R Balleine, in A Biographical Dictionary of Jersey, reflected typical Victorian disinterest in commerce, the lifeline of a small insular community such as Jersey, by mentioning in merely three lines, among more than three pages devoted to other topics, Messervy`s considerable shipowning interest. He was accordingly described as having "schemes [amid his extravagance] for gaining money. He took shares in more then one privateer. He sent boats to the Newfoundland fisheries. He exported Jersey-knit stockings to England". John Jean was more interested in the whole picture. Messervy was, between 1757 and 1763, for which there are many records, owner or part-owner of 19 vessels, none of which were mere "boats". The "more than one" privateer was in reality eight or nine privateers: Jersey's Ships and Railways (La Haule Books, 1989)

The Rev J A Messervy, in ABSJ IX, 144, wrote of Edouard that he was of a property called "D`auprès du Morin", meaning "Near Le Morin", the latter being a property about 500 metres away, owned by the Dumaresqs and formerly the Morins, who gave it its name. Eventually Edouard Messervy`s property received its own name, "La Pierre des Trois Milles", now anglicised to "Three Mile House", as the three-mile stone, from the Royal Square, is opposite the property. Joan Stevens, in Old Jersey Houses (Jersey, 1965) wrote: "There are relics of a double round arch, which was still there earlier in this [20th] century. It is now the entrance arch at La Maison Maret. There is another round arch facing west, and some chamfered windows with holes for iron bars. There is also a granite fireplace of traditional design". The author had probably not made the connection between "D`auprès du Morin" and "La Pierre des Trois Milles". The property had passed out of Messervy hands by 1743

  64. Jean and son Matthieu were previously shown without dates or further descent. Information from online trees suggests that they were at the head of the descendancy now added, but sources are still being sought to confirm this
  65. Shown in baptism register as son of Mathieu
  66. No record of this marriage has been found, and with Nicolas supposedly marrying at age 50 and having children at 56 and 59, this part of the tree must be considered highly suspicious. The baptisms of the two children are in the register
  67. No record of this marriage has been found
  68. Jurat
  69. Of La Chesnée, St Martin; Jurat 1495-1522. The Report of the Commissioners, George Treheyron and Reginald Meynours (1516), who were sent to Jersey to enquire into Royal revenues, cites the Jury of St Martin`s statement: "That Guillaume Messervy, one of the Jurats of the Island of Jersey, retains and occupies the fief of Anneville in the parish of St Martin, which fief belongs to the King. and is worth [to the Crown] 30 crowns yearly and that the said William has only paid so far the sum of 16 crowns and has occupied this fief for more than 20 years, thus depriving the King of 14 crowns yearly": Philip Ahier The Fiefs d'Anneville, Everat and Lempriere. This statement of the parish`s jurors is most useful on three counts. First it confirms that the Crown, which had confiscated the fief ca 1204 from its d`Anneville holders, had retained ownership. Thus the Messervys were merely tenants, and not its seigneurs, as previously thought. Second, it most likely explains why Edmond Messervy, Guillaume`s son, had the alledgedly unlawful experience of losing the tenancy, see Descendants of Gregoire Messervy - 2. Last, it provides a link, through Anneville, between the descendants of Gregoire Messervy and Guillaume Messervy
  70. Edmond was previously shown on this page as Edouard Messervy. His correct name and confirmed sonship of Guillaume are evident in the Rev J A Messervy`s list of Constables of St Martin. John Messervy (generation 8), Constable of St Martin, 1541-1547, was described in the list, as "John Messervy (son of Edmond, son of Guillaume)": ABSJ, VI, 138

  81. Procureur-General (Attorney-General) 1584-1590. George Messervy accidently fell from the cliffs of St Ouen, to his death, in 1590
  82. ABSJ, III, 231, "fils ainé" and not younger son of his parents` marriage, as shown in J B Payne's An Armorial of Jersey, heir of his father and of the Maison du Costil property; Constable of St Clement 1586-1587; Seigneur, by purchase, of the Fief d`Elie, St Clement
  83. Rector of St Peter 1614-1626. This line of Messervy is believed to have had descendants, whether through this Elie or a sibling, is not known
  84. Not daughter and heiress, as shown in Armorial
  85. The link to the above generation is uncertain. The du Costil's St Clement property, later called Maitland Manor, by this descent, as shown, does not pass through the Nicolles to the Anleys, as it is known to have done: see Descendants of Roger du Costil
  86. The position of Clement who married Francoise in this tree is open to question. There are suggestions that he was the son of Jean Messervy and Mabel, nee Godfray
  87. Godparent, with her father, Clement, of her brother Philippe Messervy in 1801

  110. The Armorial of Jersey, incorrectly shows, in this generation, two sisters named Mary Messervy, one of whom married Philip Pepin. Her burial entry in Grouville, in 1901, aged 93, mentions that Betsy was the sister who married Philip Pepin, who had predeceased her
