Descendants of Leonard Romeril and Jehanette Le Boutillier

La Fontaine, Ville à L`Evêcque, Trinity. An early 19th century house, built on the site of that of the Romerils, which will have dated from the late 15th or early 16th century. Ownership passed in the late 17th century, by inheritance in the female line, to a branch of the Le Couteur family. It was afterwards a Dorey and then a Nicolle house.
Romeril of La Fontaine
This tree, based upon that by the Rev J A Messervy, was first added to the site in 2010 and was extensively reviewed in 2018, and again in 2019 by Guy Dixon. It has been continuously reviewed since then, with major additions in 2025, including by Pam Hislop. A valuable contribution by the latter has been her Romeril findings in court records, which have enabled many gaps in this tree to be filled. The St John section of the tree is no longer undergoing research.
As always, 16th and 17th century dates are approximate

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

- ↑ Of Herupe. Will, dated 4 September 1682, shortly before his death, which he signed as "H. Romeril fs Jean". His eldest son, Jean Romeril, who was still living, received his father`s kitchen cupboard and such furniture as he required; the daughter (singular; this will be Marie, "only daughter and co-heir" in 1702) of my son Elie [he was the second son] received the four-panelled chest from the west bedroom; Rachel Fleury, the testator`s [third] wife received the usufruct and after her death, Helier Romeril, the testator`s "petit fils", being either grandson or "little son" [the latter, in this case; he was then aged 6] would inherit the residue. The testator appointed Nicolas de Carteret, son of Helier, and his neighbour, Pierre Hamon as executors. The will does not indicate that his son Elie was living: D/Y/A/3/26, at the Jersey Archive
- ↑ Of La Chenee (St J)
- ↑ Anne Mourant`s husband, on marriage, was described as Helier Romeril son of Jean
- ↑ See below, and clearly stated in the Will of Helier Romeril, son of Jean, as his wife, who was to be widowed in 1682, in which capacity she featured as godmother of Rachel Romeril, her step-great-grandchild, in 1685
- ↑ Jean`s baptismal entry in 1625 reads: "Jean Romeril, son of Helier, son of Jean." He was mentioned as the eldest son, in his father`s 1682 Will, but had Francois Ahier as procureur in a case dated 1687, see below: Cour du Câtel, 23/6/1687, fo. 260
- ↑ Buried as "Marie Baudains, wife of Jean Romeril son of Helier"
- ↑ Of Herupe
- ↑ See below
- ↑ 1653 baptism: "Son of Jean, son of Helier", previously wrongly shown as marrying Jeanne Poingdestre
- ↑ 1654 baptism: "Son of Jean, son of Helier, of Herupe." Simon died without issue, see below
- ↑ Edouard`s baptismal record has not found, the register having many omissions at this epoch. However, in a case before the C.H. (22/1/1702), Edouard was described as the "eldest son of Jean Romeril, who was the eldest son of Helier Romeril senior". Another party in the proceedings was his first cousin Marie Romeril, daughter of his late uncle Elie Romeril. The parties were also co-heirs regarding the inheritance of their youngest uncle, Helier Romeril junior, who had died prematurely, without issue
- ↑ Baptised as "Rachel Romeril, daughter of Edouard, son of Jean, and Anne Le Masurier, his wife." The details of Rachel`s godparents establish beyond doubt that Rachel Fleury was, indeed, the third wife of Helier Romeril whilst, at the same time, confirming the exact placement of her father, Edouard. The baptismal entry reads: "1685..Rachel Romeril, daughter of Edouard, son of Jean, and Anne Le Masurier, his wife." The infant`s godmother was: "Rachel Fleury, widow of Helier Romeril [d. 1682], father of the said Jean"
- ↑ Godparents: Edouard Baudains and Jeanne Romeril, his wife. An apparently childless marriage within the parish in 1728, may have been of this Jeanne, although she had a Trinity-born namesake, also daughter of an Edouard, born in 1698, to whom it might have applied. The St John marriage entry did not specify the parties` parishes
- ↑ The four children of this marriage were all baptised as children of "Jean Romeril, son of Helier,......"
- ↑ Buried as "Elie, son of Jean Romeril, son of Helier, of Herupe"
- ↑ Named after his godfather Pierre Hamon, son of Pierre. Nothing is known of him other than his baptism
- ↑ Baptised in Trinity, her mother`s parish, 6/10/1667: "Marie daughter of Jean Romeril of the parish of St John", whose godparents were the infant`s uncle and future aunt "Helier Romeril, son of Helier, and M[left blank] his fiancee". The latter was Marie Gruchy, who became Helier`s wife in December. Marie Romeril was described on marriage in St John: "Marie Romeril, daughter of Jean, son of Helier". The godparents of her firstborn son, Noe de Gruchy, in 1691, were Edouard Baudains and his wife, the latter being Marie Romeril`s sister Jeanne
- ↑ Of Herupe
- ↑ Baptised Elie, often used in Jersey as an abbreviation of Helier, but a different name, being the English Elias. Godparents: Etienne Hubert and Marie Romeril, his wife, of St Saviour. Elie Romeril son of Helier was buried in St John in 1671, having made his Will in his final days, on 24/5/1671, being proved on the 5th June. By the Will, he donated to the poor of St John a Quarter of annual wheat rente, over a period of years, derived from his mother and from Mr Michel Poingdestre. Also mentioned were his wife (unnamed), and their "petite fille," being "their little daughter": D/Y/A/3/33, at the Jersey Archive
- ↑ Jean Mauger and Elizabeth Romeril his wife (above, generation 5), had issue Helier Mauger (1671). His godparents were "Marie Gruchy and Helier Romeril, son of Jean, her father-in-law," which clarifies which Elie, or Helier, Romeril married Marie Gruchy. She was previously ascribed to Helier Romeril, son of Nicolas. Rachel Poingdestre, previously shown on this page as Elie`s wife, is now featured on Descendants of Jean Romeril - 4
- ↑ Marie Romeril, daughter of Elie Romeril and Marie Gruchy his wife, had for godparents, Jean Gruchy, father of the child`s mother, and Genette Le Marquand, his wife
- ↑ C.H. (22/1/1702): Marie Romeril "only daughter and heir" of her late father Helier, was a party in a case regarding their inheritance, which mentions that Edouard Romeril her first cousin was, by then, the eldest surviving son of Marie`s uncle Jean Romeril, and that her uncle Helier, third son of her grandfather, had died without issue
- ↑ C.H. 22/1/1702 describes this Helier as the "late Helier Romeril, 3rd son of Helier Romeril senr.," who had died without issue of his own flesh, and to whose inheritance Edouard Romeril, son of Jean, son of the said Helier senior was the senior heir, with Marie Romeril, only daughter of the late [H]elie[r] Romeril, the second son of the said Helier Romeril senior, as his co-heir
- ↑ Godfather: The child`s uncle, Martin Romeril, son of Philippe
- ↑ RP 9/33 (1638): Philippe Romeril son of Jean, son of Philippe, sells to Etienne Hubert son of Edouard 1 Quarter of wheat to be received from Elie [Helier] Romeril, his elder brother. And RP 14/79 (1649): Helier Romeril, son of Jean, sells to Etienne Hubert...
- ↑ RP 18/25 (1664), below
- ↑ Baptism during the period of omissions in the St John register. However, a sous-partage records the plaintiff "Edouard Rommeril, son of Philippe, son of Jean" suing what was evidently his second cousin, through Jeanne Le Boutillier (generation 3), "Philippe Rommeril, son of Philippe, son of Philippe" for his share of the inheritance of their mutual grandmother. Co-plaintiffs were the procureur of his first cousin Jean Romeril, Jean Mauger in right of his wife (Elizabeth Romeril), Jean Le Boutillier in right of his wife (Jeanne Romeril) and Mr Michel Poingdestre, tutor of "the child" of Helier Romeril: Cour du Câtel, 23/6/1687, fo. 260
- ↑ Cour du Câtel, 23 June 1687, fo. 260: "Edouard Baudains, son of Simon, ordered to pay to Edouard Romeril and co-heirs 1 Quartier of [annual] wheat rente, with arrears, from the assignation [to Baudains] of Philippe Romeril, son of Philippe, son of Philippe [a grandson, as was the said Edouard Romeril, of Jeanne Le Boutillier, wife of the said Philippe Romeril senior and of Jean Romeril, grandfather of the said Edouard], the action being brought by Catherine Le Veslet, wife and procuratrice of the said Romeril"
- ↑ Both parents named at baptism
- ↑ Godfather: Philippe Le Boutillier
- ↑ Godparents: William Jenkin and his sister
- ↑ Godparents: Thomas Esnouf and Marie Romeril, his wife
- ↑ Both parents named at baptism
- ↑ RP 18/25 (1664) "Marie Romeril, wife of Thomas Esnouf, and Jeanne Romeril, wife of William Jenkin, daughters of the late Philippe Romeril, who was son of Jean Romeril and of Jeanne Le Boutillier, his wife, sold to ...Philippe Romeril, eldest son of the said Philippe, all part or portion of their inheritance to which they would be entitled by the death of the said Philippe Romeril, their father, and...Jeanne Le Boutillier, their grandmother, ..for the price of 18 crowns"
- ↑ Both Thomas Esnouf and Marie Romeril, his wife, were still living in 1692, when they were named as godparents, on the baptism in St Lawrence of Jean Romeril, son of Edouard, Marie`s brother
- ↑ Advocate 1577-1616, Procureur of St Helier 1578, Procureur-General, 1606
