Descendants of Pierre Poingdestre

Although the forename Jean, rather than John, was almost universally used in Jersey from the 12th century until the 18th century, the early Poingdestres are commonly found as Johan, or John. The forenames in this tree researched by La Société Jersiaise (a combination of all three variants), have been left unchanged. The tree shows Jurat John Poingdestre at Generation 3 as Bailiff. However, no confirmation of this role has been found elsewhere, the only Poingdestre to hold the office apparently being Jean Poingdestre, in 1452-52, who is shown as Jurat John Poingdestre at Generation 5 in this tree
Poingdestre family page and links to other trees
In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

- ↑ Guillaume`s son Jean was described on marriage in 1635, as of St Saviour, where his father was living in 1606, when he presented a daughter for baptism. The father, a younger son, must have lived for a decade or more elsewhere - presumably in a parish without surviving 16th century registers - as the baptisms of his children have not survived. Their inclusion above and links must be regarded as provisional. Godparents support the placements

She is placed solely on godparent evidence

- ↑ In RP 13/291 (1648), Elie Poingdestre "youngest son of the late Jean Poingdestre and his late wife Elizabeth Messervy", sold to Jean Poingdestre "eldest son of the same" his share of the inheritance. This places Jean perfectly, despite his baptism having been not found
- ↑ Godfather: Helier Romeril, son of Jean
- ↑ Extente (1749). Four cabots of wheat, amounting to £6, were annually due, as recorded in 1749, to the Crown, on Marguerite Le Sueur`s property. In that year, her husband, son and grandson having previously died, the sum was owed by her great-grandson, Abraham Poingdestre. That he was recorded as owing it in person shows that he had to have then been of age. He may have been baptised in 1730 but was born in 1729
