The Gruchy Master Tree

This tree, added in 2019, originally based upon the research of the Reverend J A Messervy, now follows that of the late Walter Le Quesne

Gruchy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Probably son or grandson of Guillaume Gruchy. Rauff Gruchy was born in about 1440. In the previous generation, Guillaume Grouchye (Gruchy) bought, in 1439, from Thomas de St Martin, two fields in Trinity, on the Fief de la Trinite, (a fief of 60 acres), one of which was situated to the north-east of the purchaser's house: ABSJ, IV. These fields, which are no doubt those still retaining the name Clos Gruchy (T340 and 1299) are situated on that fief, in the west of the parish, a few hundred metres to the north-east of Champs Clairs, a property long associated with Rauff Gruchy's descendants. In 1444 Guillaume was mentioned before the Chief Pleas of the Fief de la Trinite, in arrears in his payment of rentes: L/C/66/CI/14, at Jersey Archive. Guillaume, who was alive at the same time as Rauff, may well have been his grandfather, if not his father. Of significance, is a contract in the possession of Jersey Archive, dated 1402, which features the names of Rauf (Radolphus) and Guillemet de Grochie, both of whom were also tenants of Fief de la Trinité, in the immediate part of the same parish: L/C/66/C1/2. Guillemet is a variant of Guillaume. If he was the Guillaume who in 1439 purchased the fields near Champs Clairs, or was his father, it is likely that the link between the Gruchys and de Gruchys has been discovered: see Descendants of Robin de Gruchy (1360)
  2. John Gruchy, the eldest son, died without surviving issue. His name is linked in Jersey, with that of others, to a legendary luring ashore of a Spanish ship, with the loss of many lives. A curse by a drowning woman is said to have covered good farmland, in the west of St Brelade, in sand dunes. Geologists have established that these dunes considerably pre-date John. Neither he nor any of his fellow conspirators bore St Brelade surnames. Legends do often bear some element of fact. Perhaps he was a well-known smuggler, whose activities were thus exaggerated.
  3. Of age in 1549
  4. François was the eldest son in a case heard before the Royal Court in 1588. In another, dated 28 April 1598 (CH 6/314, 333), he was sued, as the eldest son responsible for division of an inheritance, by Olivier Coutanche, guardian of the children of the late Jean Gruchy, son of Pierre, and Jean Gruchy`s widow, Marie, who was née Coutanche, concerning land held in St John, on the Fief of Surville, in his lifetime, the property of Jean Gruchy, clerk in Holy Orders. Folio 333 reveals that this Jean Gruchy was their mutual uncle, and mentions the claim of another nephew of his, Abraham Gruchy, son of Olivier
  5. Payne's Armorial of Jersey, erroneously calls him "the Rev Francis Grochie", probably confusing him with one of his clergyman cousins
  6. Vingtenier des Augrès, 1626
  7. MA. Vicar of Thorley, Isle of Wight, 1633-1663
  8. Centenier of Trinity, 1647
  9. Vingtenier des Augrès, 1660-1665; Centenier in 1666 and Procureur, in that year
  10. Centenier of Trinity in 1678 and Constable, 1697-1712. His Will mentions his four sons and two daughters, these being Esther and Jeanne, the latter having looked after him in his old age: D/Y/A/4/82, at the Jersey Archive. This seems significant, as the Will of his half-sister, Marthe Gruchy, features legacies to almost every relative and names her brothers, sisters, whether of the full, or half, blood, nephews and nieces. No Collette Gruchy, shown previously on this page as having married in 1713 in Trinity, Jean Dolbel, is mentioned. As Collette`s baptism was also never found, she has been deleted from the tree
  11. Constable
  12. Died abroad
  13. Privateer captain, Merchant and shipowner in Boston, Massachusetts. Returning to Jersey in 1758, he was the leader of the Trinity rebellion (1769), and unsuccessful candidate for Jurat, in 1769. Churchwarden of Trinity, 1780, he was also a Captain in the militia
  14. Captain (1763), North-West Regiment, Jersey Militia. On his untimely death, his cousin, Anne Martel, inherited his property
  15. Mr Thomas Gruchy was the guardian in 1724 of the children of his deceased elder brother, Charles. He was also godfather in 1756, described as the "Grandfather," of Jacques Mauger, son of Mr Jacques and his Gruchy wife. The godmother was Jeanne Remon of St Lawrence
  16. Jacques Mauger`s eldest son and namesake, was baptised in 1756 in St Brelade, as the son of Jacques Mauger and Anne Gruchy". The entry should have read 'Jeanne Gruchy', which would have agreed with the marriage entry
  17. Incorrectly recorded in the register as de Gruchy
  18. Incorrectly recorded as de Gruchy
  19. Incorrectly recorded on baptism as de Gruchy, but married as Gruchy. Walter Le Quesne wrote that Thomas was of Le Coin, St Brelade, of which parish he was Centenier in 1778
  20. Jacques was godfather in 1758, jointly with his brother Thomas Gruchy, of Thomas Jacques Mauger, son of Jacques. Anne Gruchy - really Anne Snow - described as grandmother, was the infant`s godmother. The infant survived childhood, married, and had issue in St Helier. Jacques was probably the Captain James Gruchy of the Expedition Packet, 1763-1764: J Jean, Jersey Sailing Ships
  21. Charles Bisson was the great-nephew of Elizabeth Bisson, above
  22. Marthe`s will, dated and proved in 1708, confirms the placement of most of her immediate relatives, as shown here. However, the will recorded her first husband, erroneously, as Jacques Remon, the name written immediately beforehand. Marthe`s sister, Marie, is given as the wife of Clement Hooper, whose surname was not previously known. The will shows that Marthe married twice. Her second husband was a Nicolle, as now shown, subject to a query. A Catherine Gruchy, whose kinship, if any, to the testatrix was not given, the wife of Laurens Langlois, is mentioned and has yet to be identified. Marthe`s nieces Esther and Jeanne Gruchy and her four nephews, Charles, Thomas, Jacques and Laurens Gruchy, were all beneficiaries in 1708, as were her late husband`s Nicolle, and her Remon, relatives. Marthe had an interest in shipping, in the form of a vessel commanded by Jean Dauvergne, which share she left to Abraham Remon, who was no doubt her brother-in-law: D/Y/A/4/45 (1708), at Jersey Archive
  23. CH 6/149
  24. Parents of Jean Pinel, Rector of Grouville
  25. Rector of St Mary 1552-1574
  26. Living 1549, mentioned with his siblings in court records
  27. Vincent had no surviving issue. A case before the Cour d`Héritage in 1566 names his elder brother and principal heir as Lucas Gruchy and the other brothers as Sire Jean, Olivier and Pierre. This clarifies to which generation Pierre belongs
  28. Pierre Gruchy was, it seems, from near Trinity Manor: RP3/95 and RP4/30, cited by J A Messervy in ABSJ VII
  29. Partage, dated 1610, (RP 3/126), of the inheritance of Jean Gruchy, son of Pierre, between Jean Gruchy, or Grochy, elder son, and his co-heirs, Pierre Gruchy, Matthieu Gruchy and Philippe Gruchy, "all children of the said Jean and of Marie, his wife, daughter of Jean Coutanche"
  30. Married as 'son of Jean'
  31. In May 1678, Jean Le Sueur was chosen as guardian of the children of Catherine Nicolle, widow of Jean Gruchy. The electors included Francois Gruchy and Matthieu Gruchy, who will probably have been Catherine`s brothers-in-law: L/C/66/C1/87 (1678), at Jersey Archive
  32. The will of Matthieu Gruchy is dated 27 January 1733 and was proved the following March: D/Y/A/6/96, at Jersey Archive. The testator left to the poor of Trinity 8 cabots of annual wheat rente, of which 2 cabots, for life, to be paid to his nephew Jean Marett, son of Amice, who was blind; a charge upon the land of Francois Le Sueur, son of Philippe. There was a legacy in favour of his niece Rachel Perchard, with 20 crowns each left to the testator`s three unnamed sisters, who are likely to have been Marthe, wife of Amice Marett, Catherine Gruchy, Rachel, wife of Pierre Perchard and mother of Rachel Perchard, and Marie Gruchy. A further legacy was in favour of Jean Le Boulanger, for his mother, apparently for their care of Matthieu, the testator. The godparents of this Matthieu, son of Jean, in 1665 were: Francois Gruchy, brother of Jean, which identifies, Jean, the infant`s father, and Rachel Maret, their mother
  33. Godparents: Thomas Gruchy and his wife
  34. Described on baptism in 1671 as Jean, son of Jean, son of Matthieu
  35. Godparents: Matthieu Gruchy and his mother. Matthieu, whose baptism has not been found, was almost certainly nearest brother in age to the infant`s father Jean. His mother was Rachel Maret
  36. Catherine`s godmother was probably her maternal aunt, Sara Nicolle, described as wife of Jean Le Sueur, son of Francois
  37. No baptism has been found for this Matthieu, or for his brother Jean. However, he and his mother were godparents to his niece Marie, in 1672
  38. Matthieu`s wife was not named in the two baptisms that have been found of their issue. She was buried in Trinity the month after her husband died, as the widow of Matthieu Gruchy
  39. This, the last entry at the foot of a 1677 list of Trinity baptisms, appears to read 1681. Probably "1677" was changed by overwriting by mistake the penultimate, rather than the last, '7', producing 1687. An attempt to then adjust this, led to an apparent 1681. The infant`s godparents were Jean Mollet and his wife
  40. Possible placement. No baptism has been found for Marie but the baptism in St John in 1658 of Marie Romeril gives her godparents as "Jean Gruchy, assisted by Marie, his sister, ..the said Gruchy and the said Marie, son and child of Matthieu Gruchy of Trinity." The wording for the latter suggests that Marie may have been a minor, and yet of an age to have been confirmed in the faith, in order to have been a godparent
  41. Godparents: Daniel Gruchy, Minister of St Peter, and Marie Maret
  42. Godparents: Thomas Gruchy, who was about to become Centenier, and Jeanne Maret
  43. In 1639, Pierre Gruchy, son of Pierre, and Heleyne his wife, daughter of Jean Le Sueur, son of Geffrey, and of Collette Bisson, his wife of the first party, and Francois Le Sueur, eldest son of Jean, of the second party; the former sold to the latter their share of the inheritance for 18 cabots annual wheat rente: L/C/66/C1/57 (1639), at Jersey Archive. Helaine Le Sueur, widow of Pierre, was elected tutrice on 21 August 1658 of their underaged children, by Philippe Le Boutillier, Jacques Guillaume, Matthieu Gruchy, Francois Gruchy and Elie de la Rocque: L/C/66/C1/62 at Jersey Archive
  44. Merchant; they were the forbears of the Cabots of New England
  45. Godparents: Michel Le Sueur and Marie Gruchy, his fiancée, who married in the following year
  46. Godparents: Matthieu Gruchy and his wife, who had married in 1634
  47. Godmother in 1670 of Jean Cabot (St Helier) and described as aunt of the child. She was the great-aunt
  48. There is no evidence that Pierre ever married
  49. Godparent in the latter year
  50. The eldest son in the 1658 `partage` of Philippe Gruchy, son of Jean
  51. Marthe Gruchy, missed in some Gruchy genealogies, features with her brothers Jean, Pierre, Matthieu and Philippe in the partage of their father`s and grandparents` inheritances, which were dealt with at the same time [RP 3/126 (1610)], although she and Philippe were still under the guardianship of Olivier Coutanche, a maternal relative. Apart from an income in rentes, Marthe inherited 2 vergées 14 perches and 16 pieds in Clos de Lemprière. When she sold this in 1622 to Jean Gruchy, son of François, it was as the wife of Jean Bisson, son of Leonard
  52. Regent of St Anastase, 1592-1595; Rector of St Clement, 1595-1614 and Chaplain at Mont Orgueil, -1600-1614. From 1605, Olivier was also Minister of Sark, perhaps until 1608. This arose from the claim made upon him by Philippe de Carteret, Seigneur of St Ouen and Sark, that his late father and namesake had 'nourished and raised up Olivier in his studies' in the hope that he would be employed in the Church of Sark, to which Olivier responded that he did not think himself to be under any obligation. Nevertheless, he became priest at Sark, in addition to his duties at St Clement and Mont Orgueil, on 9 April 1605. A H Ewen and Allan de Carteret, in The Fief of Sark, (The Guernsey Press: 1969) have an unnamed Gruchy as still Minister of Sark in 1608. See also ABSJ VII
  53. J A Messervy, in ABSJ VI
  54. Partage, dated 1610, (R.P.3/95), of the inheritance of Pierre Gruchy and of Katherine, his wife, between Jean Grochie, elder son of the late Jean Gruchy, who was the elder son of Pierre and of his said wife, Olivier Gruchy, younger son of Pierre, and Guillemette Gruchy, widow of Jean Dutot, daughter of Pierre and his wife. The land involved, Messervy commented, seems to be near Trinity Manor
  55. James was a sermenté in 1515, appearing before, and assisting, the Crown Commissioners. His name appears as 'de Gruchy'. This was probably correct, in his case and that of his father, Rauff, as this abbreviated form of an already long-established Jersey surname, had only just come into use. He had issue, which included a son, Andrée. A legal transaction in 1525 shows that James owned land in Trinity, as well as in St John, in which latter parish, he had descendants
  56. Co-heir of his uncle Jean
  57. Mentioned in Court Rolls, 1524
  58. Both are mentioned in a court case dated 1568
  59. Walter Le Quesne, in his typed Gruchy genealogy, had no reason to be aware that Nicolas had issue other than by Felice. He knew that a Nicolas Gruchy had married Richarde, but thought it was Nicolas, the son, despite being aware of Marie (Alexandre) in relation to the son. The unindexed CH 6/259 (1597) reveals that all three sons were by Richarde, and gives her maiden name, Picot. It also shows that all three were born in the decade or two decades prior to 1577; that they were of an age to be his sons, and not grandsons. Estimated dates have been amended accordingly
  60. The brothers Helier, Nicolas and Barthelemy Gruchy, sons of Richarde Picot, sued Richard Coutanche before the Cour d`Héritage in 1597 for the return of that part of their mother`s inheritance purchased by him: CH 6/259 (1597). The only Gruchy at this epoch married to a woman named Richarde was Nicolas Gruchy. To have been able to bring this action, all three brothers will have been in their majority, and thus born before 1577, and probably long before. Helier was buried in Trinity within five weeks of his sister-in-law, Marie (Alexandre). They probably formed a part of the same household
  61. Living in 1613 in what was probably his wife`s parish of Trinity, in the Vingtaine of Rondin. The list of Trinity communicants (1613) mentions him, his wife, two sons and a daughter as having taken communion. The two sons and daughter had evidently been confirmed, the youngest of whom aged at least 14, giving a date of birth about 1599. Walter Le Quesne`s estimated date of birth for their father "ca 1579", has been adjusted
  62. Walter Le Quesne has a note in ink beneath the name of the youngest Nicolas: "Bur 28 May 1613, Marie, femme Nicolas (Alexandre)". The source is not given. The burial he cites appears in the Trinity register
  63. Constable`s Officer 1619; Vingtenier of Rondin 1627, dismissed as a Royalist 1635
  64. Mentioned in court deeds, which have been used extensively, in these generations, as the sister of Josue
  65. Described by Walter Le Quesne as "probable daughter".
  66. Described by Le Quesne as a queried son. The entry is correct
  67. Walter Le Quesne appears to have been uncertain as to the continuation of this generation 6, below which he has a list of Gruchy christenings, without further conclusions
  68. Daughter of Nicolas and Richarde
  69. Daughter of Nicolas and Richarde
  70. Walter Le Quesne has placed Raulin as merely a possible brother of Nicolas, Barthelemy and Marie. As his younger son married in 1612, Raulin was a few years senior to Barthelemy. He lived in the Vingtaine of Herupe, in St John
