In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content
If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.
You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.
The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references
- ↑ Thomas built the second or north house at La Chasse, the family property since the middle ages. Fearing "for life and limb" due to threats from the then powerful de Soulemont family and their in-law, Nicolas de la Rocque, Seigneur of Saval, Thomas went to the length of acquiring a Chancery Writ in October 1541 to assure his safety. The de Soulemonts were John, Nicolas and Thomas. John was already, at that time, a Jurat, the other two became Jurats not long afterwards. The only clue that might lead eventually to some hint of an explanation of the de Soulemonts` extraordinary behaviour is that at least one of them, Nicolas, was a merchant. In 1537 a vessel he owned jointly with a fourth brother, Guillaume, a master mariner, was seized in French waters by the Spanish: J. Jean, Jersey Sailing Ships, (Chichester: Phillimore & Co., 1982), 166, citing a document in the La Haule Collection. The de Soulemont`s wealth, however, was built upon commerce. Abraham de Gruchy wrote in 1818 that "our Jersey owners seem to wish to keep secret the destination of their vessels." Perhaps Thomas de Gruchy, a younger son from La Chasse, had been one of their captains; one who had not been prepared to keep secret his destination? The exact nature of ships' cargoes was another sensitive issue. The original Writ is in the La Chasse collection, belonging to Mr Herb Reynolds of Alberta, Canada
- ↑ Thomas`s wife is known, from court records, to have been named Jeanette. The surname, mistakenly once believed to have been Gallichan, was unknown. Among the Rev J A Messervy`s research notes at La Société Jersiaise is a genealogy of what is now "Tree K" in the second edition of The de Gruchys of Jersey. It agrees with most of the details of that tree, although Messervy missed the middle, or second, generation of the three Guillaume de Gruchys. Of particular interest, though, is that Messervy found some evidence (not supplied) of a 16th century marriage between a Thomas de Gruchy and a Jeanette Picot. This Thomas de Gruchy is of the same generation and is known to have had a wife named Jeanette. On this basis, it would seem likely that Jeanette was a Picot
- ↑ Of Ville à L`Evêque, Trinity. An action before the Cour d`Héritage in 1581 by their younger son, Jean, for his share of his mother`s Gallichan inheritance, and the confusion of two Thomases, gave rise to the erroneous conclusion that his grandmother, Jeanette, was a Gallichan: The de Gruchys of Jersey, 2nd Edition

- ↑ Lost at sea. Walter Le Quesne and Guy Dixon, in The de Gruchys of Jersey Second Edition (2000) recorded that 'John was apprentice aboard a ship which did not reach its destination, reported in the Chroniques de Jersey in May 1870. His departure to sea had followed a family quarrel. The lad walked to Rozel Harbour, boarded a Collier brig, that belonged to Clement Richardson, awaiting the tide, transferring later as an apprentice to a deep-sea vessel, never to be seen again by his family. Captain Philip George de Gruchy passed this information to Guy Dixon in 1968. John was the captain`s uncle, although he never met him
- ↑ Of Les Pièces, St Martin
- ↑ Of Le Catel, Master mariner and Commodore, Clan Line. Philippe George went to sea at an early age as an apprentice under sail, having been brought up living just above a cove and in sight of the sea. In due course he transferred to steam. When he was still a junior mate, his ship put in to a Brazilian port. Strolling around the harbour when off-duty, he came across a Jersey vessel, stranded by the death of the master and mates, as a result of tropical fever. His years under sail were put to good account, as he offered to sail the vessel, back to Jersey. The owner's agent accepted, to the relief of all concerned. De Gruchy became a master and after some years, became commodore of Clan Line. He was in Jersey shortly before the start of the German Occupation, but left the Island on 1 April 1940. He was living in Liverpool in September 1944 when he applied for permission to return to Jersey 'at some later date'. His home address was given then as Cintra, Rozel Valley. Muriel remained in Jersey through the Occupation and after Philippe's return, the couple moved to Roslyn, Old Fort Road, Rozel
