Descendants of Gratien Collas

Francois Guillaume Collas (1808-1867) of St Martin`s House

This tree, based on one in Payne's Armorial of Jersey was lacking in many dates and needed to be treated with caution. The tree underwent a detailed review in 2021 and much more detail was added. The names of siblings of those in the direct line from the top of the tree were corrected where necessary. Payne appears to have omitted some names and included others for which baptism records can not be found. The tree as it is now shown is much more accurate than the original

Collas family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. After the Battle of St Aubin-du-Cormier in 1488, Collas fled, as did other members of the defeated Breton army, to Jersey and purchased in 1490, Maison St Martin. He was still living at the time of the Extente (1528), in which he was shown as owing, in discharge of Jean Nicolle, to the Crown an annual wheat rente of 5 Quartiers. In that of 1607, the charge was due from his grandson, Augustin Collas, "for the discharge of Gratian (sic) Collas"
  2. Living 1540
  3. Living 1570, 1607
  4. L/C/323/A3/5 (10/1609), at the Jersey Archive: "Sale by Philippe Larbalestier, guardian of Clement Collas, son of Thomas, elder son of Augustin Collas and Michelle, his wife, to Thomas Collas of 20 cabots of annual wheat rente."
  5. Although his baptismal record has not been found, Thomas was buried in St Martin 19/4/1673, (translated): "Aged in the region of ninety-three years", indicating a birth in about 1580. This would make him the firstborn child of Thomas and Jeanne, née Larbalestier, as suggested in J. B. Payne`s An Armorial of Jersey, (1858, inst.), 54, although the style of entries for this branch are ambiguous. The following confirm this placement: L/C/112/L16/4 (1612), at the Jersey Archive: "Sale, Jean Le Hardy, of the 1st party, and Thomas Collas, elder son of Thomas Collas and Jeanne, his wife, daughter of Helier Larbalestier, of the 2nd party...." and L/C/323/A3/22 (1629): "Thomas Collas, son of Thomas Collas, elder son of Augustin, sells to George Collas son of Lucas, 2 quartiers of annual wheat rente, and a hen, for the sum of 20 escus, 2 sols." For the surname and parentage of Thomas`s wife, see below
  6. Previously misread as being Pierre Collas. The girl`s godfather supplies the surname of her mother, which is not otherwise given at this date in the St Martin`s register. The entry reads: "22/12/1612 Marie, daughter of Thomas Collas was baptised and her grandfather, Edouard Hubert, gave her name"
  7. First name missing by damage having led to that part of the register`s page. Godfather: Daniel Sarre
  8. L/C/112/L16/5 (9/1612), at the Jersey Archive: Jean Collas "son of Thomas and Jeanne, his wife, daughter of Helier Larbalestier" sells to Jean Le Hardy his maternal inheritance
  9. L/C//112/L16/6 (1612), at the Jersey Archive: "Jean Noel and Marie, his wife, daughter of Thomas Collas and Jeanne, his wife, daughter of Helier Larbalestier, of the 1st party, and Philippe Larbalestier, of the 2nd party, being a sale from 1 to 2 of inheritance received by Marie from Helier Larbalestier, for the price of 4 cabots annual wheat rente"
  10. Godfather: Augustin Collas
  11. L/C/112/L16/7 (9/1612), at the Jersey Archive: Clement Collas son of Thomas and Jeanne, his wife, daughter of Helier Larbalestier, sells to Jean Le Hardy his maternal inheritance, for the price of 4 cabots annual wheat rente. Note: Clement was of age, therefore, in September 1612. In October 1609, he was still a minor: L/C/323/A3/5 (10/1609), at the Jersey Archive,: "Philippe Larbalestier, guardian of Clement Collas son of Thomas, elder son of Augustin and Michelle, his wife, sells [Clement`s parental] inheritance to [his elder brother] Thomas Collas"
  12. Godfather: Jean Le Manquais
  13. Shown as Elie in later records
