Descendants of Jean Gruchy

This tree was added to the site in 2013 and reviewed in 2019. Substantial changes were made in a 2023 review by Mike Bisson which identified that the descent from Philippe (1696- ) was duplicated. One of these branches was removed and the available details consolidated into the revised line. Based on new research by Mike Bisson, part of this branch was further extended. However, the descendants, as previously shown, of Philippe Gruchy (1757- ), generation 7, and his supposed marriage to Marie Blampied, which included generations 8 to 11, have now been transferred to their correct location at Descendants of Barthelemy Gruchy

Gruchy family page and links to other trees

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Marked on the W J Le Quesne tree as "ainé", presumably from a legal document. "Matthieu Gruchy, son of Jean" was the godfather of Jeanne Gruchy (generation 3), daughter of Philippe, in 1632. It was also his description on marrying Rachel Marett in 1634
  2. Matthieu, son of this Jean Gruchy, was baptised in 1665, in Trinity, having as godparents: "Francois Gruchy, brother of the said Jean, and Rachel Maret, their mother"
  3. In May 1678, Jean Le Sueur was chosen as guardian of the children of Catherine Nicolle, widow of Jean Gruchy. The electors included Francois Gruchy and Matthieu Gruchy, who will probably have been Catherine`s brothers-in-law: L/C/66/C1/87 (1678), at the Jersey Archive
  4. Godparents, as above. His will, dated January 1734 and proved in March, left to the poor of Trinity 8 cabots annual wheat rente, 2 cabots of which were to be for the testator`s nephew, Jean Marett, son of Amice, who was blind. Other bequests were in favour of the testator`s niece, Rachel Perchard, and his three unnamed sisters, who were likely to have been any three of Marthe, wife of Amice Marett, Catherine Gruchy, Marie Gruchy and Rachel, wife of Pierre Perchard and mother of Rachel Perchard. A further bequest was to Jean Le Boulanger, "for his mother", apparently for their care of the testator
  5. No baptism has yet been found for this Matthieu, nor for his brother Jean. He and his mother were godparents to his niece Marie, in 1672
  6. Matthieu`s wife was not named in the two baptisms that have been found of their issue. She was buried in Trinity the month after her husband died, merely as "the widow of Matthieu Gruchy"
  7. This last entry at the foot of a 1677 list of Trinity baptisms appears to read 1681.
