Descendants of John Le Moigne

Le Moigne, Seigneurs of the Fief Lempriere, St Helier.

This tree by Guy Dixon will be the subject of ongoing research, principally among 16th century court records.

The Le Geyt godfathers of Elizabeth Le Moigne in 1621 and Abraham Le Moigne in 1655, who were probably related to this family through Thomasse Le Moigne (1540- )--see footnotes-- suggest that Jean Le Moigne, generation 2, may well have been the nephew of Denys Le Moigne, son of Thomas. The latter will have been born in about 1480.

As usual, early dates are approximate

In common with the majority of our trees, this descendancy has been subject to regular review by site editors and checked against Jersey church records. Trees including French ancestry have also been checked as far as possible against French primary records. It is not always possible to carry out such checks on sections of trees with United Kingdom and/or colonial content

Record Search

If you want to search for records for any name in this family tree, or for any other family name, just click below on the first letter of the family name you are interested in. This will open a new tab in your browser giving you a list of family names beginning with that letter, for which there are baptism records in our database of half a million church and public registry records.

You can also select marriages or burials. Select the name you want and when the list of records is displayed you can easily refine the search, choosing a single parish, given name(s) and/or start and end dates.

The records are displayed 30 to a page, but by selecting the Wiki Table option at the top left of the page you can open a full, scrollable list. This list will either be displayed in a new tab or a pop-up window. You may have to edit the settings of your browser to allow pop-up windows for www.jerripediabmd.net. For the small number of family names for which a search generates more than 1,500 records you will have to refine your search (perhaps using start or end dates) to reduce the number of records found.

Notes and references

  1. Procureur, with Edmond Le Gallais, son of John, of the Church of St Helier, 1558: L/C/114/A/10, at Jersey Archive
  2. Seigneur of the Fief Lempriere, St Helier, in 1528: Extente. Note: The first name of the Le Moigne who married the du Costil heiress remains uncertain. That he was the Jean who was procureur of the Town church in 1558, is suggested by the burial in the next generation in St Helier of Jean Le Moigne, son of Jean, in 1622. However, the burial might have been that of an individual not immediately related to this branch of the family
  3. Seigneur of the Fief Lempriere, of 30 acres, owing half-relief, for which he owed the Crown 40 sous, “in right of his mother, in discharge of Guille du Costil”: Extente (1607). Buried as "Jean Le Moigne, son of Jean"
  4. Jean Le Moigne, Seigneur of the Fief Lempriere in 1607, must have died without surviving issue, as his fief was inherited by the descendants of Michel Le Moigne, who will have been, for the inheritance to pass through him, his brother, sharing Jean`s du Costil descent
  5. Buried as "Michel Le Moigne, son of Michel"
  6. Married as "Abraham, son of Michel Le Moigne" to Elizabeth Le Geyt, daughter of Jean. He will have been Seigneur of the Fief Lempriere in the years between the 1607 and 1668 Extentes
  7. Denonciateur
  8. Godparents: [Name left unfilled in] Le Geyt, son of Jean
  9. Son of Abraham Le Moigne and Elizabeth
  10. Seigneur of the Fief Lempriere, in 1668: Extente (1668); St Helier Sermenté for the Extente, in that year. He, or perhaps his father, was the Abraham Le Moigne "of Rouge Bouillon" who, in 1645, with fourteen other inhabitants of St Helier, had been sworn to value the property of those accused of treason and rebellion against the King, during the Civil War: Journal de Jean Chevalier, 218
  11. Godparents: Abraham Le Moigne and Elizabeth Le Geyt, grandparents. Michel Le Moigne`s Will was dated 13/9/1723 and proved in 1725. Evidently a man of some affluence, Michel left 600 Livres tournois to be divided between the poor of each Island parish. Other bequests were in favour of his Horman and Le Geyt nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces; also, in favour of his two great-nieces, the daughters of his "late nephew Philippe Le Moigne". A niece, Marguerite Poingdestre, was among several godchildren mentioned, including Rachel de Rue. The remainder of his goods and chattels was left to his well-beloved wife, Marie Luce: D/Y/A/5/109, at the Jersey Archive
  12. Godmother: The widow of Moyse de Rue
