Descendants of Roger du Costil
{{Family tree box 2|Personal=Roger|Family=du Costil|Details=The surname du Costil means "hillside" in Norman French. The family has lived in St Clement from at least 1309, probably always at the property now called [[Maitland Manor|Maitland], which is at the foot of the adjoining hillside. It is therefore quite feasible that the surname was formed in situ. Guille du Costil (140?- ) is the earliest member of the family from whom a definite descent has been traced. The connection with earlier generations featured is speculative. The genealogy was extracted from local court records and early surviving deeds by the Rev J A Messervy and Miss Julia Marett of La Haule. Joan Stevens and Jean Arthur conducted further research, published in ABSJ 1970. To their results have been added discoveries in the Extentes of 1528 and 1607. The final outcome was added to the site in 2018 by Guy Dixon. As with any trees this early, all dates are approximate}}

Notes and references
- ↑ Varin du Costil was also living in 1309, but in St John, (Roll of the Assizes). A Roger du Costil, an archer at Mont Orgueil Castle in 1339, was perhaps the Roger who lived on the Fief ès Houguais, owing the Crown in 1331 for two bouvées of land in his parish, St Martin
- ↑ Parents unknown
- ↑ Tentative placement
- ↑ Settled in St Helier?
- ↑ Probably the Guille du Costil of St Helier who was Seigneur of the Fief Lemprière in 1528
- ↑ Heiress
- ↑ Procureur of the Church of St Helier, 1558: L/C/114/A/10, at the Jersey Archive
- ↑ Seigneur in the 1607 Extente of the Fief Lemprière, in right of his mother. The Extente records that John Le Moigne was Seigneur of the Fief Lemprière, in St Helier, for which he owed the Crown 40 sous in discharge of Guille Costil, who had held the fief in 1528. Le Moigne also owed the Crown 42 sous for a Culver house (colombier) in the same parish, erected without permission by a former seigneur of the fief, Thomas Lemprière. Le Moigne owed this "in the right of his mother, for the discharge of the sayd Guille Costil." The latter will probably have been Le Moigne's great-grandfather, see above
- ↑ Jean Le Moigne`s successor, mentioned in the 1668 Extente, as Seigneur of the Fief Lemprière, was Abraham Le Moigne (1615-1684), son of Abraham, the latter being presumably Jean`s son or nephew. The 1668 Abraham`s great-grand-daughter, Marie Le Moigne (1709- ), was the wife of Elie Romeril, who held it, in her right, in 1749. She was daughter of Philippe (1685- ), son of Abraham (1655-1686), son of the said Abraham, Seigneur in 1668
- ↑ Drouet du Costil was Dénonciateur of the Royal Court -1462, 1465
